Sample scope and sequences for Stage 4 and Stage 5 - Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus (2022)

23/3/2023

We have just published a sample scope and sequence for the Stage 4 mandatory 100 hours course, and another for Stage 5 200-hour elective courses.

These scope and sequences are suggested only. We have already had lots of queries from proactive, fabulous colleagues who are already well into their planning, so here's a little snapshot of what you need to know:
  1. The syllabus is now digital - https://curriculum.nsw.edu.au/learning-areas/languages/modern-languages-k-10-2022. The simplest approach, in this familiarisation phase, is to click on the 'Content' tab, then select 'Stage 4'. This will show the 'Interacting' focus area, with outcome and content. You can then view 'Understanding texts' and 'Creating texts' via the left-hand menu. If you click on the ‘Show examples’ box, you'll see what the content dot points could look like in the classroom, across 3 proficiency levels. You can then click on ‘Show teaching advice’ for even more detail. Then repeat this process for Stage 5, when you're ready.
  2. We have created a 'how-to' video to guide you through the new syllabus.
  3. Topics and themes are not prescribed in the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus. However, for those who would like some direction, if you click on 'Show examples' in the digital syllabus, you'll see some examples. For example, in Stage 4 'Interacting', you'll see name, age, nationality, family, home and so on.
  4. All of the content is considered ‘essential learning’ in order for students to demonstrate achievement of the outcome. As such, when designing our units of work, we program for all the content, adjusting the time required for attainment, depending on student ability and proficiency. A single unit of work does not need to address all the content dot points - these need to be addressed across the Stage or year.

We're currently working on programming guidelines to support you further, as well as microlearning e-learning modules to lead you through important aspects of the syllabus. You'll notice we're also producing a range of infographics to display in your staffroom and/or classroom. Attached please find 'student-friendly' versions of the scope and sequence documents, to share with students (these do not contain all the NESA requirements, as they are for students, not for programming purposes).

Access the scope and sequence documents via our website. Access the student-friendly versions below (these do not contain all the NESA requirements, as they are for students, not for programming purposes).

Previously we have shared what we're excited about with the new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus (2022). One of these is that the outcomes and content for Stage 5 allow for clearer progression into Stage 6 Continuers. To showcase this for you, we've created 3 infographics – one for each of the focus areas (interacting, understanding texts and creating texts) and highlighted the connections with Stage 6 Continuers outcomes. We hope you find them helpful. You may like to display the set in your staffroom and/or classroom.

New Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus – what's exciting?

12/12/2022

As we head towards the end of the year, ready for a well-deserved break, we wanted to acknowledge that NESA’s release of a new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus (2022) might be feeling a little overwhelming to some of you. Our reality is that we have just got our heads around the current K-10 syllabuses, which are still relatively new.

We wanted to reassure you that:
  • - the new syllabus is a simpler, more supportive document
  • - our teams will provide comprehensive support throughout 2023, to support you with your planning, ready to start implementation in 2024.
The primary and secondary languages teams at the department have had a look through the syllabus and our initial reaction is ... genuine excitement! There is a lot to like about this new syllabus, and we thought we’d share with you some of the aspects we feel most excited about.

Please read the infographic attached, and maybe even print it off for your staffroom wall, so that when you come back after the January holidays, you can start sharing a little of that excitement too.

Languages K-10 syllabuses – familiarisation and planning eCourse

1/12/2022

With NESA's recent release of the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus, we will be archiving our Languages K-10 syllabuses – familiarisation and planning eCourse, which is designed for the current language-specific K-10 syllabuses.

In 2023, to support you with planning and preparing for teaching with the new syllabus from 2024, we will be designing new professional learning.

You can access the new syllabus via the NSW curriculum website.

Some key information for you:
  • 1. In 2023, teachers familiarise themselves with the syllabus, and plan and prepare for implementation of the curriculum.
  • 2. In 2024, implementation commences in schools, with:
    • - K-6
    • - mandatory 100 hour courses
    • - new 100 and 200 hour elective courses (note - classes which commence a 100 hour or 200 hour elective course in 2023 should continue to use the existing language-specific syllabus until the end of 2024).
  • 3. NESA will be releasing 4 languages syllabuses as part of curriculum reform - Aboriginal Languages K-10, Classical Languages K-10, Modern Languages K-10 and Auslan K-10 (for release in 2023, with the same implementation timeline as the other languages syllabuses).

  • The release of these new syllabuses is not designed to impact the language(s) offered in each school.
  • - In K-6, languages continue to not be mandatory. As such, schools are not required to introduce a languages program in response to this or any other new languages syllabus. However, primary schools which do run languages programs are required to use the relevant syllabus.
  • - In 7-10, students continue to learn one language over one continuous 12-month period, preferably in Years 7-8 (‘the mandatory 100 hours’).

Much of the department's support will be rolled out via our MS Teams spaces. If you teach at a NSW public school and are not yet a member, please join up.
- For K-6 teachers, j
oin the Primary Languages Networks.
- For 7-12 teachers, join the Languages statewide staffroom.

Our head teacher support document assists non-languages trained head teachers and executive who supervise teachers of languages. We've just completed an update for 2022, and the document now includes advice for both classical and modern languages.

We think the document is also essential reading for all language teachers 7-12 in NSW public schools.

The document provides comprehensive advice on:
  • - the place of languages in the NSW curriculum
  • - resourcing and advocacy
  • - programs and pathways 7-12
  • - K-10 curriculum structure
  • - assessment and reporting
  • - Stage 6 courses and eligibility requirements
  • - where to access support.

  • Feedback from our 2021 version said “This is an excellent document which is a must-read by any prospective language teacher. It gives comprehensive information about language teaching provisions in NSW schools. It highlights the benefits of learning a language and where to learn it. It gives the requires links to all aspect of HSC languages. Bravo!”

We have also advertised the support document in Staff Noticeboard, if you would prefer to let your supervising head teacher know through that channel.

You can find the document on our Support for head teachers page.
