Happy new year and welcome back to all NSW language teachers. We hope you all had a relaxing, well-deserved break, and managed some time with your favourite people and/or doing your favourite things.

We are excited to kick off 2022 by welcoming 3 new team members to the Languages and Culture team:
- Nada Gemayel and Renetta Wolfe join us as Languages Curriculum Implementation Officers 7-12 for the next 3 years.
- Ben Gibb joins us as Language Officer for Term 1, while the position is recruited.

​We look forward to supporting you in 2022.

Statewide staff meeting – using short film in the language classroom

The languages statewide staff meeting in Week 7 will explore using short film in the language classroom. Join us on Tuesday 16 November, 4-5:00 pm. The session will be presented via Microsoft Teams.

In this session we will explore ways to inspire your students to learn and use language authentically.

  • You must enrol in the session on MyPL to receive the link to the online meeting. Search for course code NR29242, and select the session for Tuesday 16 November.
  • If you have enrolled in a previous statewide staff meeting on MyPL, you will get a notice on the top of the MyPL page that says, “completed”. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the Week 7, Term 4, 2021 session, then select 'Enrol' (at the top).

The link for each statewide staff meeting is different, so you need to enrol in each session we offer.

Statewide staff meeting – using texts in languages

The languages statewide staff meeting in Week 4 this term will explore using texts in languages. Join us on Tuesday 26 October, 4-4:45 pm. The session will be presented via Microsoft Teams.

In this session you will:
- enhance your understanding of texts and their use in our context
​- build your understanding of the varying features of texts and the importance of assisting students when creating texts, through scaffolding and modelling, to support student learning and achievement.

  • You must enrol in the session on MyPL to receive the link to the online meeting. Search for course code NR29242, and select the session for Tuesday 26 October.
  • If you have enrolled in a previous statewide staff meeting on MyPL, you will get a notice on the top of the MyPL page that says, “completed”. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the Week 4, Term 4 session, then select 'Enrol' (at the top).

Statewide staff meeting – principles of exam setting

The languages statewide staff meeting in Week 7 will explore the process of the HSC examination setting. Join us on Monday 23 August, 4-5 pm, to hear from Adele Burke, Senior Assessment Officer at NESA.

We will explore:
- setting examination questions
- writing stimulus passages
- writing marking guidelines.

You must enrol in the session on MyPL to receive the link to the online meeting. Search for course code NR29242, and select the session for Monday 23 August.

On Tuesday 3 August, 2021 we delivered our statewide staff meeting with guest presenter Kate Thompson, Stage 6 Advisor. Thank you to the teachers who joined us for the live session. We will continue with our Stage 6 focus in our Week 7 meeting with guest presenter Adele Burke, Senior Assessment Officer, Examining and Testing, NESA.

Statewide staff meeting – HSC monitoring

Our statewide staff meeting in Week 4 will explore the requirements for developing Stage 6 monitoring procedures. Join us on Tuesday 3 August, 4-5 pm, to hear from the Stage 6 Advisor, Kate Thompson, from the Department of Education. 

We will explore: 
- NESA requirements and legislation
- the department's HSC monitoring advice
- what schools must do 
- what records to maintain 
- staff responsibilities.

Cultures of thinking in the language classroom – recording now available

​Thank you to our colleagues who joined us live for our session on Cultures of thinking in the language classroom. We hoped you enjoyed the session and learning more about how you can use thinking routines and tools to deepen understanding and increase engagement in your classroom.

You can now access the recording on our YouTube channel.

In coming weeks we will share ideas and tips along with a thinking routine booklet in our statewide staffroom.
