Term 4 Primary Languages Networks meetings

In Term 4, primary languages teachers are invited to join one of 8 network meetings.
 
Enrol in a meeting through MyPL using the course code NR36349. You will need to then select the session or meeting that is relevant for you.  

  • South Asian Languages – 14 November 2022 – Girraween PS
  • Vietnamese – 16 November 2022 – Lansvale PS
  • Greek – 18 November 2022 – Earlwood PS
  • Chinese – 23 November 2022 – Hurstville PS
  • Italian – 24 November 2022 – Five Dock PS
  • Arabic – 29 November 2022 – Auburn West PS
  • Community Languages – 30 November 2022 – Curran PS
  • Korean – 30 November 2022 – Campsie PS
 
All primary language teachers in department schools are encouraged to join the Primary Languages Network on MS Teams by completing this short entry survey. You will find more information about the meetings in the team. ​It should take 4 minutes to complete.

Resources and professional learning for all languages from SICLE

SICLE is organising a number of language specific PL events, focusing on strategies for online language learning. All events will be advertised on the Open Language Portal under the Resources for All Languages button and all teachers are welcome. Currently on the Portal there is information about free online workshops, for Greek, Arabic, Chinese and Hindi. More will be added in the coming weeks. 
You can also explore sample programming resources, as well as generic resources that may be useful for the teaching and learning of all languages.

New literacy resource pack for Stage 6!

​Stage 6 Literacy in context – Writing in languages is now live! This suite of resources is designed to support student writing development in languages based on current research to support student literacy.
These Stage 6 resources have been created to enable teachers to use content they are working with in class to improve the quality of students' written responses in English (to a stimulus text in the target language) and in student responses in the language they are learning. They contain videos and downloadable activities on subject vocabulary, planning for writing and student writing and feedback.
You can use these resources individually, as a faculty, or as part of a whole-school literacy team. By using these resources, you can also register hours for Elective PD.

The University of Sydney seeks internship placements for preservice language teachers

The University of Sydney is seeking placements for Combined Degree Year 4 preservice teachers in the following languages:
 
Spanish – 1
Chinese – 5
German – 1
Modern Greek – 1
Korean – 2
 
The internship placement will run from 1 to 26 February 2021. Remuneration is $660 per student.

Macquarie University seeks placements for preservice language teachers

Macquarie University is seeking placements for 2 final year students located in the South-West Sydney area in the following languages:
Chinese – 1 x 10 days  
Modern Greek – 1 x 10 days  
 
Dates to be negotiated directly between the supervising teacher and the preservice teacher. Remuneration for this placement is $330 per student. 
 
In addition, there are also 4-5 students who need to do minor placements in EAL/D (x 10 days).

Expressions of interest – language-specific writing groups for Stages 4 and 5

Expressions of interest are invited from teachers/head teachers of languages who would like to be part of language-specific writing teams to develop language-specific resources for the NSW Department of Education’s curriculum website, including sample scope and sequences, units of work and assessment tasks for Stages 4 and 5.

Each language-specific writing team will consist of up to 3 teachers for each of the following languages:
- Arabic
- Indonesian
- Italian
- Modern Greek.

Language-specific writers are required to have expertise in the target language and to be experienced in programming the new K-10 syllabuses for Stages 4 and 5. Applicants must have successfully completed the Languages K-10 syllabus familiarisation and planning workshop in 2018 (RG03190 or RG03191).

Successful applicants will be required to attend 1 full-day of training at our offices at Oxford St, Darlinghurst, followed by 4 writing days, at a location and on dates negotiated by each writing team. Successful applicants will also be required to complete Languages K-10 syllabus familiarisation and planning eCourse (RG04277), as part of their training.

The training day will be held on Monday 29 July 2019.

The Languages and Culture team will provide release for the training day and subsequent writing days. Travel and accommodation costs may also be reimbursed, if required.

New Languages K-10 syllabuses

NESA has released new K-10 syllabuses for the following languages which are now available for familiarisation. They can be downloaded as PDF and Word documents from the NESA website:
  • Arabic
  • Modern Greek
  • Turkish
  • Vietnamese​​

  • In 2019 schools will continue to deliver the current (2003) syllabuses.

  • Timeline:
  • 2019 – familiarisation and planning
  • 2020 – implementation K-6 (if a school has a languages program), Year 7 and Year 9
  • 2021 –  implementation Year 8 and Year 10

Implementation of the new syllabuses will commence from Term 1 2020. See syllabus pages for more information.

NESA is currently consulting on the draft K-10 syllabuses for Arabic, Modern Greek, Turkish and Vietnamese.
Attending a syllabus development consultation meeting will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered Professional Development (PD).

Consultation meetings are happening in Term 3:
Tuesday 24 July 2018 – Bonnie-Doon Pagewood – 4-6pm
Thursday 2 August 2018 - Liverpool Catholic Club – 4-6pm
Monday 6 August 2016 – Bankstown Sports Club – 4-6pm

NESA is currently consulting on the draft K-10 syllabuses for Arabic, Modern Greek, Turkish and Vietnamese.

If you teach one of these courses, please take some time to provide NESA with feedback by completing a survey.

The surveys are available on
NESA’s syllabus development web page and close on 12 August 2018. Please set aside some time to send your feedback – you can send a written submission or complete the online survey.

​Your feedback is a vital part of the syllabus review process.
