New Stage 5 sample unit for all languages

Sample unit of work to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders histories and cultures AND sustainability
The Languages and Culture team is very excited to publish a new generic unit starter (unit of work) which supports the cross curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, and sustainability – a sustainable future, making changes together.

​The unit can be taught over 4-5 weeks and includes the following key inquiry questions:
  • - What does Country/Place mean to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
  • - How has our local area changed over time?
  • - What can be learnt from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to sustainable practices?
  • - How do a range of cultures represent the seasons?
  • - What can we do to support sustainability?
  • - How do we share key information with the community in an engaging format?

What about learning across the curriculum?

In addition to the subject-based content, language syllabuses address important contemporary themes and general capabilities as students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century.

Learning across the curriculum content is incorporated in the new K-10 syllabuses and can be identified by the icons, which are located at the end of the dot and dash points.

When planning our units of learning, we need to consider where this content will be a natural fit.

Sample numeracy tasks for languages

Sample tasks for French, German and Japanese have been developed by teachers who have completed the LANG Languages and Numeracy online professional learning modules. These resources are available on the Stages 4 and 5 page of the curriculum website, under Learning across the curriculum.
 
The activities explicitly focus on numeracy skills and the ideas can be integrated into any language. Be sure to look at each of the samples, regardless of language, to gain ideas for embedding Stage-appropriate numeracy skills into your teaching and learning programs.
