Virtual Network – conference survey

The Languages and Culture team is seeking input from our regional and remote language teachers regarding our planned Term 3 2021 conference. This is a targeted event for language teachers 7-12 in rural and remote public schools who do not have a local geographic network available to them.

We would like to find out your preferences regarding:
  • - format of the conference
  • - timing of the conference
  • - areas of professional learning needs.

We would appreciate your feedback in completing this survey by 5 pm, Friday 6 August. It takes about 1 minute to complete.

The Value of Languages in a Multicultural World – call for papers

The Multicultural Research Centre is organising a conference on The Value of Languages in a Multicultural World, 13-15 December 2021, and are calling for papers.
 
In a culturally and linguistically diverse world in which languages are as mobile as people, goods and information, how multicultural societies understand and respond to the value of languages is a key question. The aim of this international online conference is to address this question at multiple levels of policy and practice.
​
Abstracts are invited for individual presentations and symposia that address issues of multiculturalism and multilingualism. They may fall into one of the following streams or be on any other topic relevant to the conference theme of multilingualism.

  • - Indigenous languages
  • - Multilingualism, technologies and literacies in education
  • - Learning and using English in a multilingual society
  • - Multilingualism in social and professional life

International Conference on Community/Heritage Language Education

The International Conference on Community/Heritage Language Education organised by SICLE will be held on 11-13 November 2021 at the University of Sydney.

The conference will explore community/heritage language education and its key role in maintaining and developing intergenerational linguistic and cultural understandings. The conference brings together researchers, school leaders, teachers, community members, parents and students. There will be research and classroom strands along with language specific sessions.

Registrations open for Hunter/Central Coast Language Teachers' conference

The Hunter/Central Coast Language Teachers' conference will be held on Saturday 22 February 2020 at the Rydges Hotel, Newcastle. This event is open to all language teachers from all regions and sectors including preservice teachers.
Cost of the conference is $150 for teachers and $50 for preservice teachers. The conference will run from 8:30am-4:15pm with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided.
For session and registration information please refer to the conference form. Numbers are limited and are on a first come, first served basis. Registrations close on Friday 7 February.

2019 Chinese Language Teachers' Conference – save the date!

The 2019 Chinese Language Teachers’ Conference is being organised for K-12 teachers of Chinese across NSW to support teachers in implementing the new Chinese K-10 syllabus, particularly in assessment and reporting, as well as to explore 4Cs activities (critical reflection, creative thinking, communication and collaboration) in the context of Chinese language learning to support students in thriving within school and beyond.

The conference will be held on Friday 18 October 2019. Further details regarding conference venue,  agenda and registration will be made available in early Term 3.

EOI – call for presenters for the 2019 Chinese Language Teachers' Conference

The 2019 Chinese Language Teachers’ Conference will be held on Friday 14 June 2019. NSW Department of Education is seeking Chinese language teachers to present at this conference.

Workshop for which we are seeking presenters are:
- developing engaging resources for Chinese language classrooms
- innovative and effective teaching and learning strategies
- integrating KLA in Chinese language teaching and learning
- team teaching and collaboration
- incorporating games in Chinese language teaching and learning
- raising the profile of Chinese language teachers
- others.
 
Session brief:
- workshop sessions are 45 minutes
- teachers may submit a joint EOI to present together.
 
All applications require the signature of the applicant’s current principal. Please complete the EOI form below, and email as a PDF to elizabeth.wang1@det.nsw.edu.au by 5pm on Monday 25 March 2019.
 
Successful applicants will be notified by email by Friday 29 March 2019.

Call for presenters – NSW Cross-sectoral German Teachers' Conference 2019

The Languages and Culture team is seeking teachers to present at the German Teachers’ Conference, to be held on Friday 22 March 2019 at the Goethe-Institut, Sydney.

The theme of the conference is Blick in die Zukunft – Looking to the future.

Workshop themes for which we are seeking presenters are:
  • - new K-10 German syllabus programming, assessment and reporting
  • - Stage 6 assessment strategies [German Beginners and Continuers]
  • - new Stage 6 HSC Extension course prescribed texts and/or themes
  • - innovative and effective classroom teaching and learning strategies
  • - other.

Enrolments open to beginning language teachers 7-12 – Preservice Language Teachers' Conference 2018

The Languages and Culture team (Secondary Education – Learning and Teaching Directorate) is running a Preservice Language Teachers' Conference on 16 November 2018.
​
​Due to low enrolments from preservice teachers, we are opening up the conference to beginning teachers in their first two years of teaching.


​If you are a beginning teacher and interested in attending this event, please send a copy of your tertiary transcript for the Education/Teaching course you have completed (for graduates 2016-2017) to darlene.knowles@det.nsw.edu.au to receive the enrolment link.

If you teach preservice teachers, have contact with practicum students or know a beginning language teacher, please let them know about this FREE-OF-CHARGE event.

Further details are provided in the attached flyers for both beginning teachers and preservice teachers.

Participants will be engaged in targeted workshops (based on identified needs from the tertiary sector), including:
- student engagement and advocacy
- managing multi-level classrooms
- future-focused learning in the languages classroom
- engaging teaching strategies
- time management.

There will also be plenary sessions presented by:
- TEACH.NSW
- NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)
- the NSW branch of the Modern Language Teachers’ Association (MLTA).

​Participants will have the opportunity to network with experienced teachers of their specific target language, and build relationships with preservice/beginning teachers from other NSW institutions.

All plenary and workshop sessions align strongly with Standard 6.1 and Standard 7.4 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Attendance can be logged as Evidence for Accreditation in the participants’ professional learning journals, as a record of engagement to achieve Proficient Teacher.

Morning and afternoon tea are provided.
 
Assistance with travel/accommodation available upon request.

Reminder: EOI Call for Presenters for Preservice Language Teachers' Conference – closes 22 October

​The Languages and Culture team is seeking experienced NSW Department of Education secondary language teachers to present at the Preservice Language Teachers’ Conference, Friday 16 November 2018 at the Aerial Function Centre, University of Technology Sydney.
​
We are seeking presenters for the following workshops on important themes which have been identified in  collaboration with  the tertiary sector:
  • - innovative and effective classroom teaching and learning strategies
  • - student engagement and advocacy, for example ideas to establish a positive and successful language program within a school; a focus on rural and remote settings would be valuable; topics could include addressing the value of language learning, excursions as meaningful learning experiences and activities to engage students in languages
  • - managing multi-level classrooms, for example, practical strategies to teach students of varying levels of language ability in the one class, including composite junior and senior classes
  • - future-focused learning, for example collaborative tools and apps to enhance learning, strategies for blended learning and flipped classrooms and connecting with language speakers beyond the classroom
  • - programming and assessment for the new Languages K-10 syllabuses.

Successful applicants will be funded for two days' release from schools – one day to prepare the presentation and one day to attend the conference. Travel and accommodation will also be reimbursed, if required.

Workshop brief
  • - Workshop sessions are 45-50 minutes.
  • - Workshop sessions must cater for preservice teachers of all languages but may have language-specific examples.
  • - Two teachers may submit a joint EOI to present together.
  • - Draft PowerPoint presentations and workshop resources, if applicable, must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 9 November 2018.
 
Expressions of interest will be considered based on relevance of the presentation to the conference themes. Successful applicants will be notified by email by 5pm Friday 26 October 2018.
 
All expressions of interest require the signature of the applicant’s current principal. Please complete the form below, and email as a PDF to darlene.knowles@det.nsw.edu.au no later than 5pm on Monday 22 October 2018.
