Languages and literacy 7-12 professional learning available

Our Languages and literacy PL has been rolling out through networks over the past 12 months. Central West, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast and South Coast Networks will be holding theirs during Term 3. Through this Elective PD, you gain practical tips and information for a deeper understanding and application of literacy in the languages classroom.
If you have not yet accessed the course and would like to participate, the Hunter and Central Coast networks will be offering their Languages and literacy PL jointly online and welcome other teachers to join us.
The course for the Hunter/Central Coast will run over 2 sessions in Term 3, after school via Teams, on Wednesday 20 July and Wednesday 3 August from 3:45-5 pm. Teachers must attend both sessions.

The Language Teacher Network – Central Coast will hold its Term 2 meeting on Wednesday 24 June 2020. 

The focus of the meeting will be:

  • 1. TeachMeet – Sustainable Skills Showcase
    • - Please come prepared to share ONE tool/strategy/technique/reflection on what worked well this year (during online teaching) that you will continue to use in your classroom. This doesn’t have to be a presentation, just a chat but you are welcome to put a few (5 max) slides together if you would like to.
    • - We will collate these to share within the network to support each other.

  • 2. TPRS/CI – overview and brief update from those who have been experimenting in their classrooms.
    • - What is TPRS/CI?
    • - How have network members been experimenting with this approach in their classrooms?

  • 3. 2020 Network Planning.

Many network members attended the TPRS session at the recent Hunter/Central Coast conference and this meeting has been planned to give network members a chance to share their experiences in experimenting with this approach. So if possible, try something out before the meeting and share in the TeachMeet session. Don’t worry if you weren’t there and don’t know what we’re talking about – still come along and share ideas and experiences!

Language Teacher Networks – Hunter/Central Coast/Lower North Coast present Dr Gianfranco Conti workshop

The Language Teacher Networks – Hunter/Central Coast/Lower North Coast are joining forces to host a full-day workshop with Dr Gianfranco Conti, the author and founder of the Language Gym. Dr Conti will present effective ways to maximise teaching and learning time by embedding ILRs (Implicit Learning Routines); teaching high-surrender-value functional chunks and ‘smart’ recycling.

This is open to language teachers 7-12 from NSW public schools, free of charge, under the Languages and Culture team's networking project.

Registrations open for Hunter/Central Coast Language Teachers' conference

The Hunter/Central Coast Language Teachers' conference will be held on Saturday 22 February 2020 at the Rydges Hotel, Newcastle. This event is open to all language teachers from all regions and sectors including preservice teachers.
Cost of the conference is $150 for teachers and $50 for preservice teachers. The conference will run from 8:30am-4:15pm with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided.
For session and registration information please refer to the conference form. Numbers are limited and are on a first come, first served basis. Registrations close on Friday 7 February.

Central Coast Language Teacher Network – Term 3 meeting

The Language Teacher Network – Central Coast will hold its Term 3 meeting on Tuesday 10 September. The meeting will run for 2 hours and contribute to 2.5 hours of registered professional learning on Languages and Stage 6 school-based assessment. To receive the registered hours, participants will need to:
- complete a short pre-task
- attend the meeting
​- complete a post-task.

All language teachers living and/or working in the area are welcome to attend. DoE teachers are eligible to receive the registered hours; non-DoE teachers can include their meeting as Teacher Identified hours.
