The Languages and Culture team has just published 2 new eCourses, 'Student motivation and engagement in languages' and 'High potential and gifted students in languages 7-10'.

In the 'Student motivation and engagement' eCourse, you will:
  • - learn about motivation, engagement and achievement, and how they are interconnected
  • - identify and explore factors which influence achievement in the classroom
  • - plan effective learning sequences that generate and sustain motivation and lead to improved student achievement
  • - understand the impact of feedback on engagement and achievement.
The course is NESA Accredited PD (1.5 hours). We have also attached an infographic, which provides a summary of the key messages in the course.
In the 'High potential and gifted students in languages 7-10', you will learn about:
- the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy and its underpinning principles
- Gagné’s differentiated model of talent development
- the characteristics of high potential and gifted students, across the 4 domains of potential
- characteristics you may see in the languages context
- the differentiation adjustment tool, and how it can be used to support high potential and gifted students.
You will also meet Ella, a real student in a NSW public school, and learn about her characteristics and learning needs, and then explore ways to support her in a languages context.
The course is NESA Accredited PD (1.5 hours). We have also attached an infographic, which provides a summary of some the learning behaviours you may see in the classroom, if a student has high potential or giftedness in languages.

You can learn more in the Languages statewide staffroom (staff only). Not a member yet? Join via our short entry survey.

Sample scope and sequences for Stage 4 and Stage 5 - Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus (2022)

23/3/2023

We have just published a sample scope and sequence for the Stage 4 mandatory 100 hours course, and another for Stage 5 200-hour elective courses.

These scope and sequences are suggested only. We have already had lots of queries from proactive, fabulous colleagues who are already well into their planning, so here's a little snapshot of what you need to know:
  1. The syllabus is now digital - https://curriculum.nsw.edu.au/learning-areas/languages/modern-languages-k-10-2022. The simplest approach, in this familiarisation phase, is to click on the 'Content' tab, then select 'Stage 4'. This will show the 'Interacting' focus area, with outcome and content. You can then view 'Understanding texts' and 'Creating texts' via the left-hand menu. If you click on the ‘Show examples’ box, you'll see what the content dot points could look like in the classroom, across 3 proficiency levels. You can then click on ‘Show teaching advice’ for even more detail. Then repeat this process for Stage 5, when you're ready.
  2. We have created a 'how-to' video to guide you through the new syllabus.
  3. Topics and themes are not prescribed in the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus. However, for those who would like some direction, if you click on 'Show examples' in the digital syllabus, you'll see some examples. For example, in Stage 4 'Interacting', you'll see name, age, nationality, family, home and so on.
  4. All of the content is considered ‘essential learning’ in order for students to demonstrate achievement of the outcome. As such, when designing our units of work, we program for all the content, adjusting the time required for attainment, depending on student ability and proficiency. A single unit of work does not need to address all the content dot points - these need to be addressed across the Stage or year.

We're currently working on programming guidelines to support you further, as well as microlearning e-learning modules to lead you through important aspects of the syllabus. You'll notice we're also producing a range of infographics to display in your staffroom and/or classroom. Attached please find 'student-friendly' versions of the scope and sequence documents, to share with students (these do not contain all the NESA requirements, as they are for students, not for programming purposes).

Access the scope and sequence documents via our website. Access the student-friendly versions below (these do not contain all the NESA requirements, as they are for students, not for programming purposes).

Reflections and advice from past HSC students

21/3/2023

A new HSC hub resource is available to support you and your students to prepare for the HSC. We asked past students, from a range of languages, contexts and schools, for the advice they would give students studying Stage 6 Beginners and Continuers languages courses.

  • The package includes 2 videos with students, with reflection questions to prompt discussion and explore the benefits of learning a language in Stage 6 and effective techniques to prepare for the HSC.

The videos follow a 'You can't ask that'-style format, and includes their reflections on what worked well, what they liked and what they found challenging. It is a great conversation starter to share with your class, to reflect on how to best prepare for the HSC.

We hope you and your students enjoy connecting with this group of inspiring language learners as much as we enjoyed working with them.
