Career development opportunity – Languages Adviser

Expressions of interest are invited from experienced language teachers 7-12, languages-trained executive staff and/or Educational Services personnel interested in a career opportunity as Languages Adviser (SEO2) from 29 January to 13 October 2019.
 
The position is with the Languages and Culture team within Secondary Education. The position will initially be located at Oxford Street, moving to Parramatta in May 2019.

ACARA publishes work samples for Languages

ACARA has published work sample portfolios for Languages for Foundation-Year 10. Each portfolio contains annotated student work samples in relation to three achievement standards: satisfactory, above satisfactory and below satisfactory. The samples have been drawn from a range of assessment tasks and are authentic samples of student work.

Call for presenters – NSW Cross-sectoral German Teachers' Conference 2019

The Languages and Culture team is seeking teachers to present at the German Teachers’ Conference, to be held on Friday 22 March 2019 at the Goethe-Institut, Sydney.

The theme of the conference is Blick in die Zukunft – Looking to the future.

Workshop themes for which we are seeking presenters are:
  • - new K-10 German syllabus programming, assessment and reporting
  • - Stage 6 assessment strategies [German Beginners and Continuers]
  • - new Stage 6 HSC Extension course prescribed texts and/or themes
  • - innovative and effective classroom teaching and learning strategies
  • - other.

All applications require the signature of the applicant’s current principal. Please complete the EOI form below, and email as a PDF to maxine.acosta4@det.nsw.edu.au by 5pm on Friday 15 February 2019.

Register now for Languages at Sydney: Go Global 2019

Registration is now open for Languages at Sydney: Go Global 2019, an initiative by the University of Sydney's School of Languages and Cultures.

This event is catered towards students continuing with a language, as well as students who want to learn a language from scratch, as the event will give them a taste of the programs and languages that the University of Sydney has to offer. Events on the day will include an introduction to learning at the School of Languages and Cultures, discussions with university languages students, and two language-specific immersion sessions.

Languages at Sydney: Go Global is for:
- Year 12 languages students (HSC, IB, NSW School of Languages)
- Year 12 students interested in studying languages at university
- Year 11 and 12 languages teachers and careers counsellors.

Event details
Date: Friday 1 March 2019
Time: 10am-2pm
Venue: The University of Sydney, Camperdown Campus
To register, follow the registration link. Every student and teacher will need to submit an individual registration via the registration link.

Correct information:

Temporary positions available – Gosford High School 
Gosford High School is seeking expressions of interest from teachers for two positions for Term 1 2019, commencing on 29 January 2019, with the possibility of an extension. The positions available are as follows:
- 1 language teacher who is qualified to teach French and Japanese for Years 8-12
  • - 1 language teacher who is qualified to teach French and German for Years 8-12 (including German Beginners).

The selection criteria for the position is as follows:
-  Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively as an effective team member.
- Capacity to deliver effective, engaging and differentiated teaching programs that cater to the needs of gifted and talented students in Stages 4-6.
- Demonstrated capacity to engage students in learning through effective teaching, learning and assessment practices.

Should you wish to apply for the positions, please complete the EOI attached, addressing the selection criteria. Please note that one of the referees listed must be the applicant's current principal. The expression of interest should not exceed 2 A4 pages and requires the signature of the applicant's current principal or supervisor, if the applicant is currently non-school-based staff.

EOI – Stage 6 Extension resource development

NESA has released new Stage 6 Extension course prescriptions for 2020-2024 for the following languages:
- Arabic
  • - Chinese
  • - French
  • - German
  • - Indonesian
  • - Italian
  • - Japanese
  • - Modern Greek
  • - Spanish.

  • The Languages and Culture team (Learning and Teaching Directorate – Secondary Education) will develop new language-specific support materials, to be published on the NSW Department of Education’s curriculum website.

Expressions of interest are invited from experienced teachers/head teachers of Stage 6 Extension language courses who would like to develop the support materials. Each language-specific writing team will consist of up to 3 teachers.

Successful applicants will be required to attend training and/or writing days at our offices in Darlinghurst for up to 5 days. The writing teams will commence early Term 1 2019.

The Languages and Culture team will provide release to attend training and/or writing days. Travel and accommodation costs may also be reimbursed, if required.

This project will provide teachers with the opportunity to develop their capacity as a curriculum leader and may be used as evidence for higher levels of accreditation.

Statement of duties of language-specific writers:
  • - commit to develop high quality resources and support materials for the new Stage 6 Extension course prescriptions within set timeframes
  • - collaborate both face-to-face and virtually with other language-specific writers in their teams
  • - commit to participate in up to 5 days of writing.
Selection criteria:
  • - language teacher or executive member (with language-teaching background) at a NSW public secondary school – permanent or temporary
  • - experience in teaching Stage 6 Extension course for the relevant language
  • - capacity to develop and design high-quality resources and support materials
  • - demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
