Content and Language Integrated Learning in the K-6 Languages classroom

K-6 Languages teachers are invited to attend one of four CLIL workshops presented by Associate Professor Russell Cross from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne. These workshop sessions cater for teachers new to CLIL methodology as well as teachers who have previously attended workshops provided by Early Learning and Primary Education.
 
Content Language and Integrated Learning (CLIL) offers opportunities to improve the process of language learning and language teaching. It refers to teaching subjects such as history, geography or science to students through a language other than English combining the elements of content, communication, cognition and culture. CLIL enhances student involvement, fostering creative and critical thinking. 

Introductory one-day course:  Monday 16 October 2017, Tuesday 17 October 2017
Advanced two-day course: Tuesday 14 November & Wednesday 15 November 2017

*Please note: Advanced sessions are designed as a two-day course for schools involved in the NSW Bilingual Schools Program or for teachers in other bilingual programs who have previously attended the introductory course.

Register now for MLTANSW Beginners Languages Teachers' Workshop - 28 October 2017

MLTANSW invites languages teachers to register for the upcoming MLTANSW Beginners Languages Teachers' workshop which will be held on 28 October at the University of Sydney. This workshop is targeted for languages teachers who have less than 5 years of teaching experience, however, all languages teachers at any stage of their career are invited to attend. Pending conformation, it is likely that this workshop will be NESA registered for professional standards 2.3.2, 3.4.2, 6.2.6 and 7.4.2.

Reminder: Seeking Stage 6 Extension and Stage 6 Language and Literature teachers to develop support resources - EOIs close 22 September 2017

Reminder for experienced DoE teachers of Stage 6 Extension and Stage 6 Languages and Literature to register their interest to participate in the development of high-quality support materials for the new course prescriptions that will be implemented in Term 4 2018. The closing date for applications is Friday 22 September 2017.

We are still seeking EOIs for the following courses:
- Arabic Extension
- Chinese Extension
- French Extension
- Indonesian Extension
- Italian Extension
- Modern Greek Extension
- Spanish Extension
- Chinese and Literature
- Korean and Literature
- Japanese and Literature
- Indonesian and Literature.

Participation in the writing project will be over a period of 5 days:
- Monday 4 December 2017
- Tuesday 12 December 2017
- Wednesday 13 December 2017
- Thursday 15 February 2018
- Friday 23 February 2018.

Should you wish to participate, please complete the relevant EOI form attached below and email the completed form to aris.cao1@det.nsw.edu.au. Your participation ensures that we are able to provide high-quality support to Stage 6 language teachers and without the necessary number of participants, the project will be unable to move forward.

Closing date for applications: Friday 22 September 2017.

Languages and Digital Engagement registered PL

The Languages and Digital Engagement module has been designed by the Language Advisory Network Group (LANG) to meet the professional learning needs of NSW public school languages teachers 7-12.

The module will be delivered online in a blended learning mode by accomplished languages educators.

The Languages and Digital Engagement module consists of:
- two online webinars
- associated pre-tasks
- a post-task

Participants are required to participate in both webinars which are facilitated via Adobe Connect from 3:30 pm on:
- Thursday 26 October 2017
- Thursday 9 November 2017

Successful completion of the module will contribute 3 hours of registered PD addressing standards 3.4.2 and 6.2.2 of the APST.

NSW DoE teachers are required to enrol through MyPL by 20 October

EOI: Languages Network Leaders

Seeking experienced teachers of languages 7-12 to establish new networks across NSW.

The Languages and Culture team is seeking expressions of interest from teachers of languages, including Head Teachers, who would like to support the Languages Network project. This is an excellent leadership opportunity for language teachers who are considering accreditation at Highly Accomplished with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

The Languages and Culture team will provide successful applicants with one days’ relief per term until the end of 2018, in order to plan meetings and organise professional learning.

There will also be an initial orientation day in Term 4 2017, to provide training in MyPL, Adobe Connect, SchoolBiz and other relevant platforms. Reimbursement for travel and accommodation costs for non-metropolitan teachers is available to attend the orientation day.

Networks facilitate the sharing of expertise, knowledge and resources between colleagues and with other network groups.

Funding is available to appoint up to 16 school-based network leaders. We are seeking network leaders for the following areas:
  • - Sydney North
  • - Sydney CBD/East
  • - Sydney South
  • - Central Coast
  • - Newcastle/Hunter
  • - Lower North Coast/Port Macquarie
  • - Far North Coast/Ballina
  • - Northwest NSW/Tamworth
  • - South Coast
  • - Central West/Dubbo/Orange
  • - Virtual network.

Role statement:
- leading the network and providing feedback to the Languages and Culture team
  • - organising meetings (formal and informal), venues and keeping of records including agendas, minutes attendance and network membership
  • - identifying professional learning needs for teachers of languages
  • - ongoing communications and support of language teachers within their network
  • - supporting teachers of languages in working towards and maintaining accreditation at a range of career stages.

This is a final reminder to departmental high schools that the survey for the 2017 Language Participation Yr7-9 will close Friday 8 September 2017. As of 4.30pm today, there is no sign off from your school. Please log in to the data collections website and complete your return ASAP.

In order to complete the survey, please go to the website or DoE Intranet/Portal [DoE Intranet >> My Portal >> My Websites >> Online Data Collections for Schools >> Log-in >> Language Participation – Years 7-9 Students.

The Languages and Culture team is planning to provide support to:
- maintain and grow existing language teacher networks 7-12
- establish new language teacher networks 7-12 across NSW.

​New networks will be created in areas which do not currently have an existing network.

Existing networks are listed below - if you teach in one of these areas and would like to join the appropriate network, please contact the network leader directly.

​Primary teachers of languages are invited to attend one of the K-6 Languages Network Meetings to be held in Term 3, 2017.

Meetings will be held on 18, 19 and 20 September from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at Strathfield Office with a focus on promoting languages programs in schools.
