Important advice (correction) regarding the mandatory 100 hours in Stage 4/Stage 5

28/8/2018

At our recent K-10 syllabus workshops, many teachers have asked "Is it still possible to do the mandatory hours in Year 9?". We had advised that the mandatory 100 hours for the eight new syllabuses must be taught in Stage 4 from 2019, but this advice was incorrect.

We have sought clarification from NESA, and the answer is yes, it is still possible to do the mandatory 100 hours in Year 9 (or in Year 10).

NESA has advised that there are currently no changes to the mandatory requirements with the implementation of the new syllabuses. The mandatory requirement can be taught anywhere between Years 7 to 10, but preferably in Stage 4. (Reference: https://ace.nesa.nsw.edu.au/ace-4007)

Did you miss out on your local Languages K-10 syllabus workshop?

21/8/2018

The Languages K-10 syllabus familiarisation and planning workshops are almost over for 2018. The Languages and Culture team are working on a self-paced online course to be released in Term 4, but if you are keen to participate in a face-to-face workshop, you have two chances left!

The Newcastle workshop i
s for all NSW Department of Education secondary language teachers and will be delivered on Tuesday 28 August 2018. There is no charge to attend the workshop.

The Muswellbrook workshop, on Wednesday 29 August 2018, i
s for all teachers K-10 from NSW Department of Education schools and Catholic Schools NSW. There is no charge to attend the workshop.

This professional learning is a great chance to get to know the syllabus, and make some valuable connections with other language teachers.

But don't take our word for it - here's what some teachers have said about the workshops:

"It was a very useful workshop. Good to meet other colleagues from different schools. Much appreciated!"

"Thanks for a wonderful day. It was extremely worthwhile and I look forward to participating in more professional learning to develop my programs to align with the new syllabus."

"An excellent workshop. The presenter was very encouraging, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. An extremely successful day."

"The session was very useful to me and I believe I will be able to put together a useful tool to assist me in teaching to the new syllabus in 2019 with the assistance of networking with other colleagues. It has given me an opportunity to rethink and enhance my tasks. Thank you for a very valuable session. Look forward to attending more."

Just click on the workshop you would like to attend. Registration is open until the end of this week (Friday 24 August), but please contact Michelle Walls if you would still like to register after this date.
