The Languages and Culture Team (Secondary Education) facilitated professional learning to two networks of languages teachers on the Term 3 Staff Development Day.
The Adobe Connect web conferencing platform was used to provide relevant and engaging presentations to North Coast and Nirimba languages teachers. The Language Officers presented short sessions on the DoE priorities, curriculum, legislative and state office updates, differentiation, collaborative and digital tools. Teachers were given time for group discussion in between each presentation to conceptualise the content into their school contexts. The positive feedback from participants provided evidence that teachers felt supported and inspired to introduce a new technique or digital tool into their teaching. “I just wanted to let you know how fantastic the day at Orara High was yesterday. Jody Newhouse and Jeff James were great facilitators and the day ran very professionally. The two Language Officers and their presentation via Adobe Connect were very successful. I found the information, discussion and hands on use of ICT was invaluable for my PDP. As forward-moving teachers we need to constantly be updated and work regularly with our collegiate to ensure we maintain an optimum learning environment.”
The Adobe Connect platform has great potential to bring languages teachers (and students) closer together and foster collaboration and opportunities for mentoring across NSW. The Term 3 state-wide Adobe Connect session will take place in Week 4 on Wednesday 10 August from 3.30-4.00pm. We hope many languages teachers can join this term’s webinar, especially North Coast and Nirimba teachers who now realise how simple it is to participate. Simply, go to the Secondary Languages Adobe Connect meeting room, https://connect.schools.nsw.edu.au/secondarylanguages and log in using your DoE username followed by @detnsw and your normal password. All NSW language teachers are invited to participate in the Term 3 Adobe Connect webinar on Wednesday 10 August from 3.30-4.00pm. This will include an update from State Office, information on consultation processes and resources to strengthen professional connections. Participating in the webinar can contribute to 30 minutes of teacher-identified professional learning addressing Standard 7.4.2 of the APST. Adobe Connect is very user-friendly. Simply, go to the Secondary Languages Adobe Connect meeting room, https://connect.schools.nsw.edu.au/secondarylanguages/ and log in using your DoE username followed by @detnsw and your normal password. You do not need to register to join the session, just log in a few minutes before the meeting begins. The sessions will be recorded if you are not available at the meeting time. If you’re new to using Adobe Connect, a detailed how-to-guide is available below and we recommend that you complete the connection tests prior to the event as it may take a few minutes depending on the computer you are using. We look forward to meeting with you in the Secondary Languages meeting room. ![]()
Study tours and sister schools
All study tours into NSW government schools are centrally booked through DE International. Learn more by visiting www.studytours.nsw.edu.au If you are contacted directly by an agent, organisation or overseas group (student or adult) wishing to visit your school (unless through your school's sister school relationship), please forward the request to the Study Tours team. Sister school visits are reciprocal and non-commercial, and do not need to go through DE International. However, if your school is offered payment for hosting a group, contact the Study Tours team. Where the sister-school relationship includes mostly hosting the overseas school, then the visit by the overseas group should also be arranged as a study tour through DE International. The policy and guidelines for overseas student and group visits, as well as a sample MOU for sister schools can be found at: https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/student_admin/enrolment/overseas-student-prog/implementation_1_PD20130457_i.shtml?query=overseas+groups Hosting DE International is always looking for new schools to host overseas groups, particularly homestay programs. Please contact the Study Tours team if you'd like to be involved.
