University of Sydney seeks internship placements for preservice language teachers

The University of Sydney is seeking placements for second year Master of Teaching preservice teachers in the following languages:
- Spanish
- French
- Chinese
- German
- Modern Greek
- Korean.
The internship will run from 20 July to 18 September 2020.
Please contact the Office Secondary Professional Experience Coordinator at Sydney University if you are interested in taking preservice teachers.

Modern Language Teachers Association of NSW – Linguafest 2020

The Modern Language Teachers Association of NSW (MLTANSW) has launched its MLTA NSW Linguafest 2020 with a student short film competition.

Students are invited to create and submit a short film based on the theme of "a challenge". Participants should include "a lunch box" as a signature item somewhere in the film.

Deadline for submission of films is 18 September 2020

2020 bilingual puppet show tour dates – Puss in Boots

Language Teacher Network meeting – Central Coast

The Language Teacher Network – Central Coast will hold its Term 2 meeting on Wednesday 24 June 2020.

The focus of the meeting will be:

1. TeachMeet – Sustainable Skills Showcase
- - Please come prepared to share ONE tool/strategy/technique/reflection on what worked well this year (during online teaching) that you will continue to use in your classroom. This doesn’t have to be a presentation, just a chat but you are welcome to put a few (5 max) slides together if you would like to.
- - We will collate these to share within the network to support each other.

2. TPRS/CI – overview and brief update from those who have been experimenting in their classrooms.
- - What is TPRS/CI?
- - How have network members been experimenting with this approach in their classrooms?

Free online course (MOOC) – Teaching and Learning Languages in Primary Schools (Putting Research into Practice)

A free online course (MOOC) on teaching and learning languages in primary schools starts on Monday 6 July.

A team of researchers at the Universities of Southampton, Essex and Reading has developed the course to encourage research-informed practice in primary foreign language classrooms.

The course will focus on key themes such as motivation and engagement, language development and literacy.

Each week, participants will be guided through some of the answers research has provided to these issues and draw out the pedagogical implications of these findings. There are 3staged pathways (evaluator, reflector and innovator) which will encourage participants to explore and trial the pedagogical principles. Participants will have many opportunities to reflect on the practical implications of the research and to listen to 'stories' from other teachers about their own innovative primary foreign language practice.

Resources available for Stage 6 and HSC support reminder

With preparations for the HSC underway for Stage 6 students here is a reminder of the resources available in the Stage 6 languages section of the Department of Education's website to support our language students.

1. Listening and reading resources (adapted from the old HSC Online website) are available for most Beginners and Continuers courses. Navigate to your language and scroll down to sample listening and reading activities for the link. Questions, audio, sample responses and transcripts can be found here.
2. Sample speaking questions can be found under most Beginners and Continuers courses by scrolling to the practice speaking questions link.
3. Advice for students in approaching the Beginners/Continuers/Extension HSC examinations – these can be found by navigating to your language, and the course from our Stage 6 curriculum page, under the heading Advice for students.

And don't forget to also check the Stage 6 teacher-contributed resources in our statewide staffroom in Yammer (staff only), including NSW School of Languages' guide to best practice for speaking lessons and the Languages and Culture teams' preparing students for the oral examinations in Beginners and Continuers advice.
