K-10 draft languages syllabuses

French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean and Spanish teachers in the NSW Department of Education participated in the Adobe Connect webinar on Wednesday 28 June to hear about the K-10 draft syllabuses and have an opportunity to provide feedback.

If you were not able to join the Adobe Connect webinar, the recording (24 minutes) can be accessed via 
https://connect.schools.nsw.edu.au/p2ufx07rdcg/.

The consultation period is the only opportunity for teachers to be part of the department’s feedback to NESA. Teachers are encouraged to download and critically review the content in the language-specific draft K-10 syllabuses. 

All information including the draft syllabuses can be accessed on the NESA site. 

If you have any concerns with the content in the draft syllabuses, please document the areas of concern and recommendations and return via email to janelle.byrne@det.nsw.edu.au by Monday 10 July 2017. Please include the following details to ensure your concerns can be clearly understood and incorporated in our response:

Languages NSW now has its own YouTube channel!

Languages NSW now has its own YouTube channel, which is expanding to become a ‘one-stop-shop’ for any teachers looking for useful and relevant videos for classroom use and professional learning.

This channel is a great addition to any video content resources available to Language teachers. Some videos on our channel have been developed by the Department of Education while other videos have been linked from other useful channels.
 
Teachers with a Google account can also subscribe and receive regular email updates. If teachers have any suggestions for resources they’d love to see on this channel, please contact us.

SBS National Languages Competition 2017 (24 July to 1 September)

SBS is conducting its National Languages Competition from 24 July to 1 September 2017.

Students aged 4 to 18 years across Australia who are learning a language other than English are invited to participate by creating a short video about what learning a language means to them.

HSC study guide for Languages

The 2017 HSC study guide for Languages, produced by The Sydney Morning Herald and NESA, is available on the SMH website.
It includes a short video and an article with advice for students of all language courses on preparing for the oral and written exams. 
Additional exam advice and resources for students can be accessed on the NESA site.
The 2017 HSC oral and written exam timetables are available on the HSC key dates and exam timetables section of the NESA website.

Consultation on K-10 draft languages syllabuses

NESA has released K-10 draft syllabuses for French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean and Spanish.

The NSW Department of Education is conducting state-wide consultation for DoE teachers on these draft syllabuses from 13-29 June 2017. This consultation period is the only opportunity for teachers to be part of the department’s feedback to NESA. (Note: Other education sectors run their own consultation).

As a DoE teacher, if you'd like to be part of our consultation, here's what you need to do:
1. Download the relevant draft language-specific K-10 syllabus from the NESA website.

2. Carefully read through the draft syllabus which is relevant to you. If you have any areas of concern or strength within any of the draft languages syllabuses, please submit via email to Janelle Byrne by Thursday 29 June 2017.

3. Attend the Adobe Connect session on Wednesday 28 June (3:30-4:30pm) by logging into https://connect.schools.nsw.edu.au/secondarylanguages.
If you haven't participated in an Adobe Connect session before, please download the 'how-to' guide below and follow the instructions. It's easy!

4. Complete the NESA online survey by 7 August 2017.
 
Teachers are encouraged to participate in the NESA-led consultation opportunities in addition to departmental consultation. Full details including the NESA consultation meetings are available on the NESA website.

New course prescriptions for Stage 6 Language and Literature courses 2019 - 2023

The new course prescriptions for Stage 6 Language and Literature courses in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean 2019-2023 are now available. 

Implementation of the new course prescriptions will commence from Term 1 2018.

Schools are reminded that study of the texts prescribed for the Year 12 course may not begin before the completion of the Year 11 course. This also applies to the study of a prescribed text in another medium, such as the film of a novel.

Languages K-10 Framework published

The final version of the Languages K-10 Framework has been published on the NESA website. 

Teachers are encouraged to access the 
Languages K-10 Framework and become familiar with the structure, content and terminology of the document which is guiding the development of the new NSW language-specific syllabuses.

The Chinese and Japanese syllabuses based on the new Framework are available on the NESA website.  

NESA will be consulting on a number of other languages syllabuses during June - August 2017.
Department teachers are encouraged to stay up-to-date on Languages NSW to find out how to provide feedback on the draft syllabuses during the consultation period.

OFFICIAL NOTICE: IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW CHINESE AND JAPANESE K-10 SYLLABUSES IN NSW

New NSW languages syllabuses incorporating the Australian Curriculum are now available for Chinese and Japanese K-10.

Implementation of the new NSW Chinese and Japanese K-10 syllabuses will commence from Term 1, 2019, as follows:

Years 7-10 
2017-2018: Familiarisation and planning 
2019: Start teaching Year 7 and Year 9 elective course
2020: Start teaching Year 8 and Year 10 elective course

Kindergarten to Year 6
Implementation of the Chinese and Japanese syllabuses in K–6 is optional.
2017: Familiarisation and planning K-6
2018: Optional to teach K-6
2019: Start teaching K-6 (if implementing)

Initial support materials, including guides to the new syllabuses, are available to assist teachers in familiarisation and planning of the syllabus. 

The new syllabuses will be available in an interactive online format later in 2017. Additional support materials including sample scope and sequences, sample teaching units and sample assessment activities will be available in Term 3, 2017. 

The new Chinese and Japanese K-10 syllabuses and initial support materials are available on the NESA website.
