The first ever LIVE languages staff meeting for language teachers 7-12 in NSW public schools

Our virtual staffroom goes LIVE!
To support language teachers 7-12 in NSW public schools during these unprecedented times, we're going to trial a LIVE virtual staff meeting.

If you'd prefer to ask your questions 'face-to-face', rather than posting on our virtual staffroom in Yammer, we're going to open our Adobe Connect room this Thursday, from 8-10am and from 2-4pm.

There is absolutely no pressure to attend – the idea is just to provide the opportunity to touch base with each other in this brave new world, and to ask any questions you'd like help with.

When you join the room:
- run the Audio Setup Wizard from the top menu bar (under 'Meeting')
- check your microphone icon is on (it should be green)
- say hello!
The Languages and Culture team will be in the room at the given times, and are happy to chat.

Interacting in languages

We are also running short, interactive sessions for language teachers 7-12 in NSW public schools, which showcase how you can interact with students through Adobe Connect:
- Tuesday 31 March 2.00pm
- Wednesday 1 April 9.00am
- Thursday 2 April at 7.00pm

Just click on our sample language lesson link at your chosen time to participate.

Professional learning for language teachers 7-12 – supporting learning from home

In response to teacher requests, the Languages and Culture team will be running a range of professional learning opportunities over the coming days, including live virtual staff meetings where you can participate in Q&A sessions, and pre-recorded professional learning videos. Finding time to plan – support for Stage 6 Beginners and Continuers

Re-configuring your lessons (and for many of us, our brains) to deliver remotely is challenging and we need to give ourselves time to plan. For Stage 6, we've been super-busy getting you access to more resources. On our curriculum website, we have added sample speaking questions across a range of Beginners courses. For Beginners and Continuers, we have added listening and reading items, re-purposed from the old HSC Online site. You can set any of this work for students to go on with, while you focus on your planning.

Adding audio to PowerPoint – a quick guide for language teachers

Being able to hear the language is such a critical part of our subject area. We've created a short guide on how to add audio to PowerPoint - either on individual slides or on the entire slide show. We trialled this yesterday and it is SUPER FAST and SUPER easy! We hope you find it helpful.

- We've added a new category to our NEWS page - 'learning from home' (see categories list at right), to help you find support quickly.

- We'll stay in touch with you via social media.
- We've identified 7 steps to support your planning - see attached.
- We're putting the finishing touches on PL for Adobe Connect and PowerPoint for languages.

Need some breathing space to plan?

We have created this generic task board resource as an option for teachers looking for some alternative tasks for classes experiencing disruptions to learning. The intention is to support teachers at this challenging time to engage students in student-centred language learning activities with a variety of choices to suit their interests.

We encourage you to make changes to the task board, share further ideas with colleagues and consider making adjustments for students who may not have access to technology, for example they may create a word game or puzzle rather than a Kahoot quiz.

Our focus is to keep our students engaged with language learning activities and support you in providing some alternatives.

Dr Gianfranco Conti, the well-known blogger, speaker and writer of language materials, has made some of his resources available free of charge for French and Spanish. The resources are suitable for Years 10-12, depending on the course.

Languages – curriculum update for teachers in NSW public schools

Dear colleagues,
We would like to update you on the support we are creating and can provide immediately and in coming weeks.

Learning from home website
Through the learning from home site, all KLA teams are providing support, which is being updated weekly. The intent of the support is not to replicate the high-quality teaching and learning programs and resources designed by teachers. Rather, it aims to give teachers breathing space and time, in case they are unwell, have family duties that take priority, or any other extenuating circumstances in these unprecedented times. You will find resources, useful links and advice.

NSW statewide staffrooms
Our statewide staffrooms are accessed through Yammer – join the Languages NSW (7-12) group or the Languages NSW (K-6) group. Our teams are committed to answering any questions you may have, and you can also share ideas and resources through these channels.

Professional learning
Our face-to-face professional learning courses have been postponed until further notice.
Our 2 eCourses are still open:
- RG08902 Languages K-10 syllabus familiarisation and planning eCourse
- RG10281 Stage 6 school-based assessment in languages eCourse

Survey
