What if I only teach Year 8? Will there be more professional learning in 2019?

29/3/2018

NESA has released new K-10 syllabuses for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

The syllabuses are for implementation in 2019 with Years 7 and 9, and in 2020 with Years 8 and 10.

Some teachers who only teach the mandatory 100 hours to Year 8 are thinking they may wait another year before they start becoming familiar with the new syllabus and planning for implementation.

Please note: Almost all our professional learning opportunities are happening in 2018, so now's the best time to build you knowledge and understanding, and start planning!

2018 is the year for familiarisation with the new K-10 language syllabuses for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. It’s time to build our understanding of the structure, features and content of the new syllabus documents, and the implications for programming and assessment.

This diagram explains the organisation of content in the new K-10 language syllabuses. We can see that there are 2 strands, 5 objectives and 8 or 9 outcomes (depending on the language), organised by Stage.

These are underpinned by 3 values and attitudes.

Over the coming weeks, we will be unpacking each of these features in more detail – stay tuned!

It is our aim that most regional language teachers will be able to attend a workshop located no more than two hours’ drive from their school. For teachers in very remote schools, it may be best to fly into Sydney or the closest regional centre to attend one of our workshops.

This infographic shows the dates and locations of each of these face-to-face workshops. Workshop registration details will be published soon. At this stage, please just save the date!

15/3/2018

NESA has released new K-10 syllabuses for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

The Languages and Culture team (Secondary Education) is offering a range of professional learning opportunities for secondary language teachers in NSW public schools – these will be advertised via the Languages NSW blog, SchoolBiz, the curriculum website, Twitter and Facebook.

Our first PL opportunity is a blended learning module: Languages K-10 Syllabus Familiarisation.

The module is registered for 1.5 hours and is comprised of:
  • - a pre-task (reading the syllabus, with guiding focus questions)
  • - a 45 minute Adobe Connect session.

There are three available dates and times for the Adobe Connect sessions:
  • - Monday, 30 April (1:30-2:15pm)
This is the Term 2 Staff Development Day, so networks/communities of schools may wish to listen together. Registrations close Friday, 13 April.
  • - Tuesday, 15 May (7:45-8:30am)
    Registrations close Thursday, 10 May.
  • - Wednesday, 23 May (3:30-4:15pm)
This is in place of our scheduled state-wide Adobe Connect. Registrations close Friday, 18 May.

Teachers attend one Adobe Connect session only and must enrol via MyPL prior to the closing date to be able to attend. Enter “Languages and K-10 Syllabus Familiarisation” to search the catalogue. You will need to select a session to enrol.

Completion of the Languages K-10 Syllabus Familiarisation module will contribute 1.5 hours of QTC-registered PD addressing standards 6.2.2 and 7.2.2 towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
