Seeking mentors for the Virtual Languages Mentoring Network – VLMN

Seeking experienced teachers of Chinese, German, Japanese, French and/or Latin to be mentors in the Virtual Languages Mentoring Network (VLMN) program.

Are you an experienced teacher of Chinese, German, Japanese, French and/or Latin? We are currently finalising the new 2022-2023 cohort of the VLMN program and are looking for experienced teachers of these languages who are interested in mentoring the 2022-2023 cohort of beginning language teachers.

The VLMN was established in 2017 to support beginning language teachers 7-12. Beginning and geographically remote teachers of languages often work as the only language teacher in the school and have specific needs which cannot always be met at the school level.

Beginning and/or isolated language teachers (mentees) are matched with an experienced language teacher (mentor) for the duration of the VLMN program. The VLMN program will begin with a centrally-located conference for both mentors and mentees. The Languages and Culture team will provide release to participants to facilitate mentoring support and to attend targeted professional learning for the duration of the VLMN program.

The VLMN will:
• identify professional learning needs for mentees and mentors
• implement evidence-based mentoring practices to develop the capacity of mentees
• support teachers of languages in working towards and maintaining accreditation at a range of career stages
• build the capacity of virtual and face-to-face language teacher networks
• provide significant professional development opportunities for all mentors and mentees.

The VLMN includes the program leaders from the Languages and Culture team, and school-based language teacher mentors working to support the mentee teachers.

Support document for language teachers and executive

Our head teacher support document assists non-languages trained head teachers and executive who supervise teachers of languages. We've just completed an update for 2022, and the document now includes advice for both classical and modern languages.

We think the document is also essential reading for all language teachers 7-12 in NSW public schools.

The document provides comprehensive advice on:
  • - the place of languages in the NSW curriculum
  • - resourcing and advocacy
  • - programs and pathways 7-12
  • - K-10 curriculum structure
  • - assessment and reporting
  • - Stage 6 courses and eligibility requirements
  • - where to access support.

  • Feedback from our 2021 version said “This is an excellent document which is a must-read by any prospective language teacher. It gives comprehensive information about language teaching provisions in NSW schools. It highlights the benefits of learning a language and where to learn it. It gives the requires links to all aspect of HSC languages. Bravo!”

We have also advertised the support document in Staff Noticeboard, if you would prefer to let your supervising head teacher know through that channel.

Happy new year and welcome back to all NSW language teachers. We hope you all had a relaxing, well-deserved break, and managed some time with your favourite people and/or doing your favourite things.

We are excited to kick off 2022 by welcoming 3 new team members to the Languages and Culture team:
- Nada Gemayel and Renetta Wolfe join us as Languages Curriculum Implementation Officers 7-12 for the next 3 years.
- Ben Gibb joins us as Language Officer for Term 1, while the position is recruited.

​We look forward to supporting you in 2022.
