NESA has published K-10 scope and sequences for Arabic, Modern Greek, Turkish and Vietnamese. They are now available on NESA’s website. These identify concepts and show linguistic progression from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Welcome back from your well-deserved summer holidays – we hope you all enjoyed a fun and relaxing break and are feeling refreshed as we start the 2020 school year.
For those teaching Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, you should now be using the new K-10 syllabus documents with all students K-10. For those teaching Arabic, Modern Greek, Turkish and Vietnamese, you should be using the new syllabus documents with K-6, Year 7 and Year 9. Make sure you bookmark and check out our curriculum support website to access our professional learning events and resources. We apologise that not all resources went up last term, as planned. The "back-end" of our website moved to a new platform, which resulted in a freeze to uploads for several weeks. We will ensure Stages 4 and 5 are fully populated by the end of this term. Primary – staffing update - Konnie Zagrimanis continues in the role of Languages Adviser, K-6. - Stephen Nogher continues in the role of Languages Officer, K-6. - Anastasia Casimatis has joined the team as Languages Resource Development Officer. Secondary – staffing update - Elisabeth Robertson continues as Coordinator, Languages and Culture. - Evia Kyriacou is A/Languages Adviser in Term 1, while the position is being recruited. - Coreena Allen, Marcela Ayas and Maxine Acosta continue as Language Officers, joined by Shanelle Ingram for Term 1 (relieving for Evia). Networks are a vital component of teacher professional learning and support, and strengthen links between our team and schools. Network leaders are provided with comprehensive support in order to fulfil the requirements of the role, including training and relief. ![]() Virtual Languages Mentoring Network (VLMN) – mentees The Languages and Culture team supports beginning language teachers 7-12 through the VLMN. A beginning teacher is one in their first 2 years of teaching in metro areas or in their first 5 years in rural and remote NSW. The VLMN provides targeted support over an 18 month period, with beginning teachers (mentees) matched to experienced teacher mentors on a 2:1 ratio. Expressions of interest are invited from beginning teachers of languages 7-12 (mentees) who would like to join the second cohort of VLMN for 2020. The VLMN:
The 2019-2020 VLMN cohort began in Term 3 2019 and will continue until the end of Term 4 2020. In facilitating mentoring support, the Languages and Culture team provides teacher release to participants to attend targeted professional learning. A 2-day conference will be held on 6 and 7 April 2020, and mentees are required to attend. Relief costs are provided, together with travel and accommodation, where required. The Hunter/Central Coast Language Teachers' conference will be held on Saturday 22 February 2020 at the Rydges Hotel, Newcastle. This event is open to all language teachers from all regions and sectors including preservice teachers.
Cost of the conference is $150 for teachers and $50 for preservice teachers. The conference will run from 8:30am-4:15pm with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided. For session and registration information please refer to the conference form. Numbers are limited and are on a first come, first served basis. Registrations close on Friday 7 February.
