Our students have shown a desire to gain a greater diversity of cultural experiences in the context of cross-cultural interactions. Currently, some of our students have been communicating, via a Pen Pal video program, with students in the USA. Because of the impact the Pen Pal program is having with our students, we would like to take advantage of other cross-cultural partnerships and focus on Australia because of the Austrailia-Japan Foundation’s past successes and potential for an exchange program.
School Information: Takagawa Gakuen is located in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It is a private Junior and Senior High School. It is a fairly large school with an enrollment of over 600 students. Also, most notably, Takagawa is widely regarded for its sports programs and has won many championships.
School Location: Takagawa Gakuen is located within Hofu, a very historical city. Hofu is home to Hofu Tenman-gu Shrine, which was founded in the 10th century dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, who was revered as a scholar and politician. It is also the oldest of Japan's three Tenjin (grand shrines dedicated to Michizane).
Purpose of Partnership: The main purpose of forming a relationship with a sister school is to give students both in Japan and Australia a chance to foster a cross cultural understanding through friendship and explore digital media tools to enable communication.
Preparation: In preparation for this partnership, our students are exploring areas of Australian culture including: National Holidays and Traditional Foods
Proposed Plan: Initially, this program would begin by utilizing the already existing Pen-Pal structure within Takagawa Gakuen. It is our goal to share knowledge of Japanese culture as well as the daily life of a being a student at Takagawa Gakuen and in return, we would like to learn more about Australian culture and what it’s like to be a student in Australia.
Group: The group of students who will have the opportunity to experience this within Takagawa will be the English and Culture Club. The group will number from 15-20 and be within the range of Junior High School level (7th to 9th grade).
Communication: Our English and Culture club members are eager to communicate in English. In regard to staff communication, Ms. Yukiko Hamada and Mr. Michael Reid will facilitate the communication with the sister school.
