Purpose: To give students real life meaning/purpose of learning language. This can be a regular or one off exchange to suit teaching and learning programs.
Topics: about my school, self-introduction, my holiday, trip to Japan, school camp, school event/fundraising, cultural presentation, my favourite person or anything you think would be suitable to be shared.
Formats: any format that suits your task - a letter, diary entry, poster, digital, video (I have permission to record students’ voice and their work – student reads their created book or explains about their work)
My school has Japanese bilingual classes (5 hours delivery in Japanese from Kindergarten) and Languages classes. Stage 3 bilingual students have equivalent to Stage 5/beginners knowledge. (Primary students’ age appropriate topics and structures would need to be selected.
I would like Stage 3 bilingual students to be able to apply their knowledge in real life tasks. Having schools share their work will create more meaningful learning (more reading and writing practice).
*Target levels: Stage 5/Beginners but I can also organise work with more simple language which would be suitable for Stage 4 students.
*For example - My year 2 bilingual this term will be creating maps of the school/local community in Science/Geography units and also will be writing a description about our school and community in Japanese. I am happy to swap their work to revise the vocabulary and discuss different school lives and communities.
NOTE: I am thinking of no full names to be used and maybe no school name to be disclosed.
Please email me on mai.takamura@det.nsw.edu.au if you are interested in discussing further.
I am flexible with topics, formats and frequency to make it work the best for both ends.
