JTAN nengajyo competition
JTAN is holding its annual 年賀状 (nengajyo) competition for primary students of Japanese, and Year 7 and Year 8 students in NSW. There will be 3 divisions available – Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4. Each school may enter a maximum of 10 postcard-sized 年賀状 (9cm x 14cm).
 
The following requirements must be adhered to:
  • - all work must be original work by the student (including art, illustrations and design)
- the new year’s greeting should be written in hiragana (kanji may be included too)
- on the back of each individual postcard, clearly state the student's name, school and entry division (Stage 2, 3 or 4)
- please also include a contest entry sheet list with the school name, postal address, principal’s name, Japanese teacher’s name & email, and student’s names for contact purposes
- students may use the following website to gain inspiration: Nengajyo  年賀状 無料ダウンロード.

Winners will be selected by nominated art teachers and announced early in Term 1 2022. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each division. Five highly commended prizes will also be awarded for excellent submissions. Students will receive a JTAN certificate and a small Japanese-themed prize.

Prescribed issues and grammar booklet for Japanese Extension
This new resource consists of 60 pages of supplementary reading comprehension texts across all three prescribed issues, with vocabulary and tasks (comprehension questions, discussion questions, writing prompts) as well as approximately 20 pages of explanations of prescribed grammar and practice exercises. There are also 10 pages of exam technique/tips/hints for all sections of the exam and additional context to support the film and associated vocabulary.

NSW Japanese speech contest

Year 11 and 12 students of Japanese are invited to participate in the annual NSW Japanese speech contest.

This year the contest will be held online, enabling more students from across NSW to participate. 

The contest will be held on Sunday 22 August.

Students, including those with a Japanese background, will enter the high school senior division.

2021 JTAN exams purchases
2021 JTAN exams are available to purchase now. Please note that the exam files will be made available from July, but orders must be made prior to the end of June to allow time for administrative checks to be completed. The purchase and use of JTAN exams are subject to specific terms and conditions outlined on the information page when purchasing exams in addition to normal JTAN terms and conditions. In 2021 the exam declaration will be completed digitally.

Japanese speech contest
The Japanese language speech contest is held annually at state and national level. The aims of the contest are to encourage learners who are studying Japanese to showcase their language skills in a challenging context and to advocate Japanese language learning in general. The NSW Japanese language speech contest is organised by the NSW Japanese speech contest steering committee, consisting of members from NSW universities and high schools. This year the NSW contest will be held via Zoom on Sunday 22 August. The shift  to online delivery in 2021 opens doors for learners in schools and universities located away from Sydney CBD to participate in the contest.
 
Information regarding the contest format, eligibility, divisions, judging criteria and prizes can be found on this document. Applications must be lodged via the registration website. Please email any enquiries about the contest to the organisers.

2020 Australia-Japan relations essay contest

The Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney is holding the 2020 Australia-Japan relations essay contest. The contest aims to encourage and develop an enhanced understanding of Australia-Japan relations among secondary school students in New South Wales. The contest is open to all high school students. Submissions close on Wednesday 9 September 2020 and must arrive at the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney by this date.

2018 Japanese Film Festival school groups screening of Oremonogatari – 23 November 2018

The high school comedy Oremonogatari (My Love Story!) will be screened for school groups in Sydney as part of the 2018 Japanese Film Festival.
 
Date: 23 November 2018
Time: 10:00am-12:45pm
Venue: Event Cinemas, George Street
 
The screening will include a fun Japan quiz before the start of the film, and a unit of work on the film is available for teachers. Teachers are invited to bring classes along for a Term 4 excursion.
 
The previous cap of 50 tickets per school has been lifted, so you can now bring larger groups. Tickets are $10 per student, and can be purchased online by credit card or invoice.

​The NSW Japanese Language Speech Contest will be held on Sunday 2 September 2018 at the University of NSW.

Applications to participate in the speech contest remain open until Thursday 23 August 2018.

2018 Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest for secondary school students

The 2018 Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest is now open for all NSW and Northern Territory secondary school students. This is an English language contest that is open to all students, not only those who are studying Japanese.

The contest aims to encourage an understanding of Japan and Australia-Japan relations for secondary school students.

Submissions close on Wednesday 22 August 2018 and must arrive at the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney by this date.

Please see the attached for the contest's flyer, a letter from the consul, entry guidelines and essay cover sheet. Entry guidelines and cover sheets are also available for download on the consulate website.
