The Japan Foundation School Leader Fellowship Tour  - opportunity for Principals to visit Japan

20/9/2016

The School Leader Fellowship Tour organised by the Japan Foundation Sydney, aims to escort school leaders to Japan so they can experience Japanese culture and learn more about Japan so they can be supportive of the Japanese language program.

It also aims to help leaders to see the opportunity for cross-curricula links with Japanese language and other teaching areas focusing on Japan.

The Japan Foundation Sydney would like to invite principals who would benefit from the visit, either by encouraging them to support the program that is already in their schools, or by encouraging them to begin a Japanese program.

NSW public school teachers (primary and secondary) who feel that their school could benefit from their principal's participation in this program should send a brief outline of the reasons for recommending their principal to janelle.byrne@det.nsw.edu.au by Friday 23 September 2016.

Please note, the final decision will be determined by the Japan Foundation, Sydney as it is a national cross-sectoral tour.

New Online Resource: Collaboratus - Waking up in Japan

9/9/2016

Waking up in Japan is a new online learning resource developed by NSW DoE Learning Systems as part of the Collaboratus series.

Students work collaboratively to research a topic of cultural interest in Japan and make a presentation (digital and/or face-to-face) that demonstrates their learning. This resource supports students studying the 100-hour mandatory Stage 4 or 100/200 elective Stage 5 Japanese courses. Key learning outcomes relate to the syllabus objective: Moving between cultures. Students also have the opportunity to engage with the objective: Using language, through investigating key Japanese words (Stage 4) and conducting a Japanese Q&A interview (Stage 5) related to their chosen topic.

The Collaboratus series embeds the use of online collaboration tools, such as Google Apps for Education and Microsoft Office 365, in future focused teaching and learning activities that develop students' 21st century learning skills. Each resource in the series has been developed through a collaborative partnership between school-based teachers, expert educators from operational and State-office Directorates, and the Learning Design and Development team.

The Language Participation Years 7-9 collection is currently open. The collection is due to close Friday 11 September. We encourage schools to complete the survey before the due date to ensure that any issues with the data or Signing Off can be rectified before the survey closes. Please Sign Off on the data collection website before COB Friday, 11 September 2015.

Important note: The LP 7-9 Collection is a separate survey from the ‘2016 BOSTES Languages Education Survey’ which schools have also been asked to complete this week. We apologise for any confusion, however schools still need to complete the Department LP7-9 collection.

Please go to the website http://datacollections.det.nsw.edu.au/ or DEC Intranet/Portal [DEC Intranet >> My Portal >> My Websites >> Online Data Collections for Schools >> Log-in >> Language Participation – Years 7-9 Students].
If you are not responsible for completing this collection please pass this information to the responsible person.
Thank you for your efforts.

Could all teachers of languages encourage their Principals to complete the survey ASAP?
