Destination Flavour Japan

Destination Flavour - Japan
Thursday nights at 8.00pm on SBS ONE (new 10-part series)

Adam Liaw hosts this new ten-part series that dives deep into the story of
Japanese cuisine and culture in Destination Flavour Japan, following on from the first popular Destination Flavour which aired on SBS in 2012. Adam is taking food lovers on a journey of discovery along the entire length of Japan - from its frozen north, through the cherry-blossomed mainland, and down to the tropical sun-soaked southern islands.

You can catch up on past programs (episode 2 was screened last Thursday 26 September) at http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/48573507652/Destination-Flavour-Japan

It’s great cultural information and listening practice – Adam speaks fluent Japanese too.

Coming up October 17 Episode Five

Adam Liaw hits the packed streets of Tokyo in the midst of cherry blossom season, finding fabulous food
in places so small that four is a crowd. A master chef shares the secrets of his donburi – a staple of the typical Japanese ‘salaryman’; and Adam concocts a sweet festival favourite from bean paste and pickled cherry leaves.

Seeking programs and advice on Obento textbooks

19/9/2013

I am on leave at the moment and the teacher who has taken my place does not speak Japanese. I am able to go in and help her occasionally but otherwise she is doing it on her own.

To make her life easier we have purchased Obentoo Snack Pack 1 & 2 for the Year 8 class and plan on getting the next one for the Year 9/10 elective class next year. Sadly we do not have an elective class this year but are hoping for one next year.

Just wondering if anyone out there has an Obentoo Snack Pack program for Year 8 and a program for Y9 using the follow up Obentoo text, that they would be willing to pass on and share. We have been using Mirai but
this is too difficult for her to follow. I have been meaning to change text books and feel now is as good a time as any! Hopefully we will be on track then for 2014.

As I am off work at the moment I do not have time to write a program for her.

I am also wondering if someone can help me with the best text for Year 8. I had thought the Snack Pack but I am now thinking Obento Deluxe would be better.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Helen O'Neill

Review of Ipads for teaching Japanese

19/9/2013

Thanks to Kyomi Calwell for this information.
I have been testing a few different iPad apps for Japanese.

Imiwa? (iPhone and iPad)
Free Japanese word database – It used to be Kotoba but has changed. Kotoba is no longer updated. There are some odd words (too classic even for me to understand). If you find errors you can contact the developer so it
stays up to date.
http://www.imiwaapp.com/

Jishop (iPhone and iPad) Concise Free / Advanced $17.99 / Plus $1.99
Have you had trouble finding a kanji in a dictionary? Jishop has handwriting recognition (might require some practice). Once you find the kanji from the list it shows some jukugo (compound word) and sound file (machine voice but better than no guide). It has reading, meaning, radical, and stroke search as well.

Dr. Moku’s Katakana Mnemonics (iPad/iPhone) Limited Access Free / $4.49 for Full
There is hiragana and katakana mnemonics like 48 minutes series only this is on iPad and each set is cheaper. Great for visual learners.

KanjiPictoGraphix (iPad only) $13.99
I haven’t tried this app on my iPad yet because it is a little expensive but one of my students has it. I’m not sure if it is made by the same author as the book version. Contains 611 kanji. I was looking for an app like this for students with Aspergers. They are visual learners who seem to learn quickly this way.

You need to search in Japanese (漢字) for apps below:

Isshoni Manabu Kanji Drill (iPad only – from 1nensei to 6nensei) Free for sample / $1.99 for each year grade.
You can have multiple students on one iPad (maximum unknown) and teacher/parents can mark. It is a great idea for paperless mini test. You can record the result as well.

Shougakusei no kanji (iPad only) Free
1nensei to 6nensei kanji, katakana, and hiragana all in one. No test. An no individual account but good for practice. I think Issho ni Manabou (above) is better but if you have no budget this is good enough.

Happy teaching and learning!

Obento game from SBS

19/9/2013

SBS has developed an Obento game which accompanies Adam Liaw's new ten-part series that dives deep into the story of Japanese cuisine and culture. Adam is taking food lovers on a journey of discovery along the entire length of Japan - from its frozen north, through the cherry-blossomed mainland, and down to the tropical sun-soaked southern islands.

The Obento game allows students to choose and find out information about different Japanese ingredients. Having chosen 3 ingredients, the Obento suggests a recipe that they could make using those ingredients.

My name is Hiroshi Fukushima. I am a current participant on the JET Programme as an Assistant Language Teacher. One of my roles as an Assistant teacher is to assist with internationalisation. I am looking for primary and high schools who may be interested in participating in an international exchange with students in Japan. I currently teach at six schools in Kumamoto City, a mix of elementary and junior high schools. The type of exchange I am suggesting is email exchange, Skype video exchange and letter exchange.
If you are interested please contact me Hiroshi Fukushima <hiroshi.fukushima1@gmail.com>
