Reminder: Call for presenters – NSW cross-sectoral Japanese Teachers' Conference 2018

The Languages and Culture team is seeking teachers of NSW public schools to present at the Japanese Teachers’ Conference, to be held on Friday 17 August 2018 at the Novotel Sydney Central.
 
The theme of the conference is Our practice, our passion.

Workshop themes for which we are seeking presenters include:
  • - new K-10 Japanese syllabus programming and assessment
  • - Stage 6 assessment strategies [Japanese Beginners, Continuers, Extension]
  • - Stage 6 course prescriptions [Japanese Extension and Japanese and Literacy]
  • - innovative and effective classroom teaching and learning strategies
  • - other.

​Please see attached form for further details.

Expressions of interest will be considered based on the alignment to current demands identified though the survey of teachers’ professional learning needs. Teachers may express interest in presenting more than one workshop. 

A friendly reminder that applications must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 7 May 2018.

Non-departmental teachers are also invited to present – please contact MWahlin@aisnsw.edu.au if you're at an independent school and would like to present.

Update from the Tanken Centre

Year 12 HSC Workshops
The Tanken Centre is running a number of Year 12 HSC Workshops in July. The workshops will be held on the follow dates:
Year 12 Beginners: 11-12 July 2018
Year 12 Continuers: 17-18 July 2018
Year 12 Extension: 20 July 2018.

Further information can be found in the registration form are attached.

Tanken Centre excursion bookings
If your school is booking an excursion at the Tanken Centre, the booking form should be sent to the Tanken Centre as soon as the excursion date is confirmed. Should you need to cancel your booking, please inform the Tanken Centre as soon as practicable. There is a minimum 4 weeks' notice for cancellation, and the cancellation charge of $10 per student will apply if there is less than 4 weeks' notice.

Excursions require a minimum number of 20 students, with a maximum number of students of 32 students for high school excursions and 36 students for primary school excursions. If your group has less than 20 students, please alert the Tanken Centre to this when submitting your preferred date of excursion, as we may be able to accommodate a smaller booking by combining two groups together.

The following dates in Term 2 have become available. Please contact the Tanken Centre if you are interested in these dates.
- 17 May 2018

NESA Program Builder – now available for Japanese K-10 syllabus

The new Japanese syllabus (released 2017) has now been integrated into NESA's Program Builder. The Program Builder is an online programming tool that allows teachers to select outcomes and content directly from the syllabus in order to create scope and sequences and units.

Teachers are able to sign in to Program Builder using their departmental or Scootle login details and the Program Builder is accessible from NESA's website using the following link:
http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/understanding-the-curriculum/programming

A reminder that implementation of the new Japanese syllabus is in 2019 (for Years 7 and 9) and in 2020 (for Years 8 and 10).

Japanese Government 2019 MEXT Scholarships – applications now open

The Japanese Government 2019 MEXT Scholarship applications are now open for the Undergraduate category and Research category. These scholarships support Australian citizens who wish to further their studies at a Japanese university.

Application forms and details (including the application timeline, age requirements and examination requirements for eligibility) are available on the Embassy of Japan website:

The deadline for applications is Friday 15 June 2018.

Seeking practicum placements for Japanese

Sydney University is seeking a number of practicum placements for Japanese. Details of the placements are as follows:

Fourth year combined degree – seeking two second placements.
Practicum dates – 7 May to 8 June (25 days).

Second year Master of Teaching – seeking two second placements.
Practicum dates – 7 May to 1 June (20 days).

If you are interested and available to take on a Japanese student teacher during these periods, please contact the practicum coordinator at your school. Alternatively, please contact the Professional Experience Office within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at Sydney University at

The Japan Foundation intensive seminar July 2018 – applications open

​Applications are open for The Japan Foundation’s intensive seminar to be held in Sydney. 

The intensive seminar is 19 hours of NESA-registered professional development.

​The seminar enables teachers to develop language skills, gain confidence using Japanese, and to develop language teaching strategies and skills which they can apply in the language classroom.

Specific focuses include Australian curriculum and ICT-based learning. Participants will be immersed in a Japanese language environment suited to their level and will have ample opportunity for networking.

New in 2018:
- teachers who have attended the intensive seminar in previous years are now eligible to apply
- teachers who are Japanese natives can now attend on Day 2 only (there will be no registered hours however a certificate for 6 hours participation will be issued).

The Japan Foundation, Sydney


Dates:
Monday 9 July to Thursday 12 July 2018

Target audience:
1. Secondary teachers (Years 7-9 in Australia and Years 9-11 in New Zealand) currently teaching Japanese
2. Preservice teachers (currently studying or recently graduated as a Japanese teacher in Australia)


Participation fee:
FREE (Note: Participants are not eligible for The Japan Foundation Travel Grant for Professional Development Event)

Application submission deadline:
Online applications close Monday 14 May 2018
