Dear Members of JTAN,
We hope you had a wonderful and Happy Easter! May your bellies be full of chocolate...
Please view the attached March Newsletter which includes the following:
  • ​​Change to Workshop date - The September Teacher PD Workshop (ICT & Kurikku Nippon) has been rescheduled to Saturday 17th September
  • Student Holiday Workshops (4th - 6th July) - These workshops will focus on HSC examination skills and will benefit students of Japanese Extension, Continuers and Beginners
  • Japanese Speaking Day at Karabar High School (Queanbeyan, NSW) to be held Friday 20th May - Inquiries and applications should be sent to Claire Lane at CLAIRE.LANE@det.nsw.edu.au
  • Event updates, including Shaberanaito (Thursday 7th April) and the Japanese Film Festival - There are also details on an Overseas Japanese Recitation Contest for your Year 7-9 students!
We would like to remind teachers to participate in our upcoming Teacher PD Workshop on Friday 29th April - BOSTES Officers will be attending to answer your queries regarding Teacher Accreditation and Maintenance. 
 
Year 12 Continuers Day is also open for enrolments until 28th May. Although this may sound far away, please apply early to secure your students' positions.
 
Finally, we have received three membership payments from anonymous payees! We have received payment numbers/codes without the names of teachers or schools. If you have applied for 2016 membership and still have not received your new login details, please contact Teruko at pobox6453@jtan.org.au to check the progress of your membership.

School excursions to The Japan Foundation, Sydney

Experience a taste of Japan at The Japan Foundation, Sydney. The Centre Visit program brings Japanese to life outside the classroom and makes for a great excursion. 
 
In 2015, over 1000 students visited The Japan Foundation for language and cultural workshops and film screenings. 来(き)てくださって、ありがとうございました。
 
Tailored lessons run for approximately one to two hours. Teachers can choose from a wide range of lesson topics and activities, or a program relevant to your students’ interests and proficiency level can be created.
The Centre Visit program is free of charge, but bookings are essential. Bookings are open for every school day of the year, but make sure you book early, as dates fill fast! Please see the flyer below and for further information and bookings, go to http://www.jpf.org.au/centrevisit/index.html

Maternity leave position

Peel High School in Tamworth is seeking a qualified Japanese teacher to take a full-time maternity leave position from July 2016 for one year. Classes include Year 7 culture studies, Years 8, 9 and 10 Japanese and could possibly include teaching at the feeder primary school. Peel High School also offers French, Italian and Spanish.

2016 HSC languages oral examination timetable now available

The 2016 HSC languages oral examination timetable is now available on the BOSTES website. Teachers can view the dates, times and venues for all oral language examinations on Schools Online from Monday 30 May to Friday 3 June. They are able to schedule examinations for their students from Monday 6 June to Tuesday 14 June.
Confirmation sheets, indicating examination times, venues and relevant venue maps, will be available to students via Students Online from Monday 11 July. Students should also go to Students Online to read helpful information and watch a short video on how to prepare for their oral examination.

JTAN Teacher workshop on 29 April 2016

Teacher accreditation and Teaching Senryu workshop on 29 April 2016 
APPLICATION CLOSING DATE EXTENDED UNTIL 22 APRIL
 
This workshop will allow participants to have face-to-face discussion time with BOSTES Officers regarding Teacher Accreditation and Maintenance. All NSW teachers will be required to maintain professional development hours from 2018, so this is a unique opportunity to lodge all your questions with BOSTES themselves.
 
We encourage members to send in their questions about Teacher Accreditation prior to the workshop. Please send all inquiries to enquire@jtan.org.au.

The workshop will also benefit teachers with senior Japanese classes, as all attendees will receive teaching materials and training in the art of Senryu poetry.

Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design in the Sydney inner west area is currently seeking a full-time Japanese trained teacher to take junior Japanese and some English from the beginning of Term 2. Applicants need not be English trained. Narara Valley High School on the Central Coast is looking for a qualified Japanese teacher to take a full-time maternity leave position from approximately June 6th until December 20th 2016. Suitable candidates will need to be qualified to teach Years 7-12 Japanese including Continuers and Beginners as the school has a combined HSC class. Ability and experience teaching and catering for diverse needs of students (in particular lower ability and accelerated) is highly desirable.
