Multiple choice questions in HSC examinations

30/3/2015

Multiple-choice questions in HSC examinationsIn order to have a more valid and consistent approach across the multiple-choice sections of examinations, all examination committees have been asked to order the multiple-choice questions according to the level of difficulty. Previously some examinations, like PDHPE and some science examinations, were ordered according to HSC core modules.

This means in the majority of HSC examinations, multiple choice questions will be ordered according to the level of difficulty, starting with easier questions and working up to more challenging questions. There may be exceptions, for example when more than one question relates to the same stimulus text.

JAPAN

I Was Born, But…..   Umarete wa mita keredo (1932)  90 minutes

with English and Japanese subtitles

… Director Yasujiro Ozu starring Tatsuo Saito

This charming and delightful film by Yasujiro  Ozu, one of Japan’s most highly esteemed directors, is a beautiful work of art that paints a story in very subtle tones and yet leaves a permanent impression on the viewer’s mind and soul.

I Was Born, But… is a family story seen from the viewpoint of two small boys who see the world through very different eyes.  Ozu creates this perspective so effectively that viewers are amused as they are reminded of their own childhood.  But playing hooky from school and faking exam results are no laughing matter for the parents who are struggling with problems the children cannot begin to fathom.

Ozu received high acclaim for his special cinematic style in directing movies of the 1940s and ‘50s, and is best remembered for his realistic portrayals of family life in medium-class Japan.  He developed a remarkable insight into human nature and relationships which he was able to convey visually in an original and unique style.  This is evident in I Was Born, But…, as the two young brothers learn to adapt to a new neighbourhood, a new school and the bullies on their block.

We are currently taking bookings and expressions of interest from students to join the 2015 study tour.  This tour is open to any of our Modern Languages students or families and friends who have an interest in Japanese language and culture, you don't have to be currently enrolled in a Japanese course with us to join the tour, we just want those with an interest in learning about Japanese culture and language.

The 2015 study tour will be commencing in Saitama on 28 June for one week of engaging and absorbing activities in Saitama and Tokyo.  The tour incorporates a fantastic selection of Japanese classes and cultural talks at Saitama University, museum visits and other cultural activities, and of course plenty of free time for sightseeing.  The whole experience is perfectly enhanced by your homestay accommodation.  Within your homestay, you will have the opportunity to practise everything you have learnt in an environment of famously warm Japanese hospitality.

The cost of tuition and homestay is only AUD$500.  Flights, visas, insurance and other travel related expenses will be your own responsibility.  If you are interested, please email k.wherry@unsw.edu.au for more detailed information.  The deadline to confirm your place is 10 May 2015.
