Terima kasih to the 10 schools and 146 students who entered this year’s Kompetisi Siswa.

Members of the Australia-Indonesia Association of NSW, along with the MLTA of NSW and the Indonesian Consulate, including the Indonesian Consul-General, met yesterday to judge the entries.

Each year we receive many creative and interesting entries, which makes choosing the winners a difficult task.  Congratulations to the place-getters from each category, who will each be receiving a prize generously donated by the Australia-Indonesia Association of NSW.

All students who entered the competition will receive a certificate of participation from the MLTA of NSW and each participating school will receive a certificate of appreciation from the Indonesian Consulate.

A full list of winners in each category can be downloaded below.

A special thank you to the teachers who encourage their students to participate in the competition each year.

The Indonesia Uncovered Tour is for Year 11 and 12 students and will run from 28th November until 19th December 2015. Students who are completing Year 10 will be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is being run in partnership with:
• Universitas Islam Indonesia (Islamic University of Indonesia),
• BINUS University,
• Sumatran Orangutan Society, and the
• Orangutan Information Centre.

We are proud of our well-balanced, educational and fun itinerary, which sees a different focus in each location.

• Yogyakarta - Indonesian language, culture and community development. Students will spend lots of time with buddies from a local university. The buddies will join many of the group activities such as visits to local temples, Mt Merapi and some great not-for-profits like Legal Aid and Friends of the Earth. The students can choose between the intensive language stream (20 hours of Indonesian language classes) and a general stream for those not so focused on the language. These two streams will do slightly different activities at times in Yogyakarta but will spend the majority of the time as one group.

• Jakarta - government and business. Students will witness the huge range of activities happening in Indonesia through visits to organisations such as the Australian Embassy, ANZ, the Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation, the Indonesian Stock Exchange, the Human Rights Working Group and much more.

• Sumatra – environment & sustainability. The students will trek through the rainforest to learn about the issues facing Indonesia's environment and see orangutans in their natural habitat. They will also volunteer with a local environmental NGO, to which some of the program fee is donated.

Our Indonesia team includes Jack McNaught, a former university lecturer in Australia with years of experience managing groups in Indonesia; and Frida Komesaroff who is also a fluent Indonesian speaker with years of teaching experience and who ran the Indonesia Uncovered Tour last year.

The program cost is $3,300 per student, which includes all accommodation, most meals, all internal transport in Indonesia, all costs for all activities (including entrance fees), language classes and lots of support both before and during the trip. More details about the fee and inclusions can be found at http://www.gapindonesia.com/program-details-indonesia-uncovered/

  • September – Teach English in a remote village.
  • October – Volunteer at a local NGO.

The cost will be approximately $5,600 and will include all accommodation, some meals, transportation within Bali for scheduled activities, all costs for all activities, language classes and the facilitation of the teaching English position, the volunteer work and the internship.
