As Greece remembers the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising (November 1973), it allows us to remember with them. Attached below is a short film outlining the events of the November 1973 popular rejection of the Greek military junta of 1967–1974. The file may be used as an educational resource in our classrooms. In order to commemorate Greek resistance during World War II, and in particular Greece's determination at the time to not allow the Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy strategic locations, the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW (GOC) celebrated with a Reception attended by the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, distinguished guests, educators, students and their families.
During the evening, Greek language students recited poems and performed Greek dances, and the celebratory atmosphere was once again prevailed by feelings of pride for a small nation's great achievement to derail the seemingly unstoppable Axis forces during a world war. The 2018 NSW Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Student Achievement – Community Languages Schools took place on Monday the 29th of October at the Sir John Clancy Auditorium of the University of New South Wales.
During the evening 10 students received the Minister’s Award for outstanding achievement in the study of their community language, and a total of 128 junior and senior students received a Highly Commended or a Commended Award. The Greek educational community acknowledges the efforts and commitment of our Greek language learners, their individual contributions to their language schools and wider community, and their significant role in the development of intercultural understanding. As Greek language educators we are particularly proud of all the achievers in Greek and would like to congratulate them all: 2018 Award Recipients - Commended Award - Junior Peter Baldas Dimitrios Katrinakis Kelly Parissis Anna Patras Anastasia Savidis Billy-Rose Taliai 2018 Award Recipients – Commended Award - Senior Maria Kakali Kristen Servos 2018 Award Recipients - Highly Commended - Junior Jesse Georges Dimitri Giannakopoulos Kristine Glekas Emmanuel Kasadelis Tiana Magiros Alana Tzikas The evening performance for this year’s Award ceremony was presented by the Greek Dancing School of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW (GOC), which in 2018 is celebrating 120 years of service to the Greek Australian community in NSW.
