Greek Language Teachers Conference 2018: Call for Papers

The conference will provide teachers of Modern Greek a unique networking and professional development opportunity.  K-12 teachers of Modern Greek in government and non-government schools are invited to present in workshops in Greek or English across a range of topics including support for the new K-10 syllabus, the use of ICT in the language classroom and innovative approaches to the teaching of Greek.

Suggested conference topics:
- Pragmatic varieties of Greek in the Australian context
- Quality teaching
- Use of ICT for teaching and learning
- Support for new teachers
- Support for the new K-10 syllabus
- Innovative approaches in teaching of Greek as a second / foreign language
- Distance education
- Certificate of Attainment in Greek and useful teaching resources

Submission types

​Concise paper, 4p incl. references
Concise papers are around work-in-progress for pilot studies, small-scale exploratory projects, reports on highly specialised topics, or conceptual papers on recent developments. Concise papers also encompass reviews of key new directions for developing practices for teaching the Greek language.

Discussion paper, 3p incl. references
Discussion papers describe thought-papers to reach-out for feedback, discussions, and connecting and collaborating with like-minded delegates.

Poster proposal, ​2p incl. references
Posters offer visual representations of projects and development initiatives that provide opportunities for conference delegates to discuss the topic with presenters. Posters enable individuals or groups to display information about innovative projects or activities in an informal, interactive environment.

Sharing practice, ​1p incl. references
​Sharing Practice abstracts and conference sessions will enable delegates to learn from each other. Your Sharing Practice session at the conference will enable you to share insights and exchange ideas and examples of best practice with conference delegates.

8th Greek Student Film Festival: Expressions of Interest: 20 August 2018

The time has come to gear up and get ready for the 8th Greek Student Film Festival!

The Greek Student Film Festival encourages the maintenance of the Greek culture and the use of
the Greek language in creative and innovative ways.

The project in NSW is presented by the following organisations: Greek Film Festival, Greek Orthodox Community of NSW and the Education Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney.

Entries will be screened during the 25th Greek Film Festival held at Palace Cinemas Norton Street in Leichhardt in mid-October 2018.

The topic for this year’s competition is: “A journey”
 
Participants are encouraged to interpret the topic as creatively as they wish. Each short film should not exceed 5mins.

This year’s signature item is a LEAF. Participants who choose to include a LEAF in their film can do so, in any way they like, whether it be a part of the main story or simply in the background of a shot.
 
Short films can be submitted in any of the following genres, but must use Greek as the main language:
1. Animation  2. Documentary  3. Fiction

The competition will be divided into two categories:
1. Primary School students  2. Secondary School students 

There will be with three prizes
awarded in each category: 
1st, 2nd and 3rd.
 
Students and groups wishing to participate in this year’s competition are invited to express their interest by submitting the attached form by Monday August 20, 2018 to greekfestival@goc.com.au

Reminder: Have your say on the Modern Greek K-10 syllabus development

NESA is currently consulting on the draft K-10 syllabuses for Modern Greek, and is inviting teachers to complete its online survey. All consultation feedback will be considered before finalising the syllabus.

The syllabus documents and feedback surveys can be accessed via NESA's website.
 
The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Teachers may also choose to attend one of the draft syllabus consultation meetings which will be held between 4-6pm on the following dates:
- Thursday 2 August 2018 - Liverpool Catholic Club
- Monday 6 August 2016 - Bankstown Sports Club

Attending a syllabus development consultation meeting will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered Professional Development (PD).

Online survey and written feedback are due by Sunday 12 August 2018.
