REMINDER: NSW Department of Education - Scholarship support for Goethe Institut Summer School 2018

17/11/2017

A reminder to all NSW Department of Education teachers of German, that the Language and Culture team is offering scholarships to support secondary German teachers from NSW public schools to attend the Goethe Institute 2018 German Summer School on Ocean Street, from 8-15 January 2018.

The department is offering up to five partial scholarships to secondary teachers of German currently employed in NSW public schools. The scholarships will cover 50% of the event registration fee plus up to $500 towards accommodation and travel expenses.

This event provides a targeted immersion experience for German learners/teachers at various levels of language competence, and also offers a five-day professional learning module for teachers with a language level of B1 and above.

This year, for the first time, the Goethe Insitut is offering the new module “Landeskunde” (an addition to DLL 5: “Lernmaterialien und Medien”), which will focus on the following questions:

•        What do you consider as “Landeskunde”?
•        What is culture?
•        Which cultural topics or learning objectives are taught in a textbook unit?

In this professional development course, you will develop units that you can use in your lessons to gradually introduce your students to the topic of “Landeskunde”. The module is designed to enhance your personal teaching practice and expand your intercultural teaching 'toolbox'.

Don't forget, members of the NSW MLTA are also eligible to apply for funding for up to 50% of the event registration cost.

If you are a secondary teacher of German in a NSW public school, and are interested in receiving support to attend this valuable professional learning event, please complete the attached EOI and return it with a one page supporting statement to Michelle Walls by 5pm on Tuesday 21 November  2017 (Note: We have extended the closing date).

If you have any questions regarding the scholarship opportunity, please contact Michelle Walls on (02) 9244 5573 or via email.

The Summer School will be run as a day program at the Goethe Institute in Woollarah (Sydney) this year, rather than in a residential format, so attendees will need to organise their own accommodation for the week. The Summer School is open to both government and non-government teachers.

Note: Members of the NSW MLTA are also eligible to apply for funding for up to 50% of the event registration cost.
