The November Goethe-Institut newsletter has arrived with new things for NSW German teachers.

Scholarships to attend seminars in 2021
Scholarships are on offer to attend seminars on teaching methods, socio-cultural studies and facilitating professional development. The seminars aim to foster an exchange of ideas and the development of group teaching models. Depending on the COVID situation at the time, these seminars will either be held face-to face in Germany, or online. Applications close 10 November 2020. Kurz und bündig online workshops
Join us for the last 2 online professional learning sessions this year to get ideas and inspiration for the remainder of Term 4.

My grammar rules – high school 
These fortnightly grammar sessions (Wednesdays 6-7:30pm, throughout Term 4) will help high school students to understand the most relevant grammatical concepts they need to ace their German exams. In each 90-minute virtual, interactive small group class an experienced teacher will explain one challenging grammatical topic and help to apply it. The course fee is $50.

24H DEUTSCH
The innovative video format on YouTube will deliver a new explanatory video on the German language every week for 16 weeks. The entertaining videos deal with grammar topics that often raise questions in language usage. In order to be able to use what you hear immediately, you can find online exercises at the Goethe-Institut community "Deutsch für dich".

The September Goethe-Institut newsletter has arrived, with new things on offer for NSW German teachers.

EUNIC competition
Would you like to win a Leitner Libelle folding ebike or a German language course? Simply capture your favourite German saying, along with the meaning and the literal English translation, and be part of the #literallyEurope photo competition. Further information can be found online.

Kino for kids festival
The popular Kino for kids festival will run online in 2020. Teachers will be able to stream and show the films online in the classroom. Further information can be found online.

The August 2020 Goethe-Institut newsletter has arrived, with lots to offer NSW German teachers.

Kurz und bündig workshops
These compact and convenient online professional learning units are aimed at teachers of German who are short of time and who are looking for new ideas and effective methods for their classes. Educators from Europe and Australia share their expertise and experience with digital content in short 60 minute sessions via Zoom. More information is available via the website.

GETVICO24 2020
Teachers of German are welcome to participate in the global virtual conference GETVICO24. This professional learning will commence on Wednesday 21 October and will include 140 presentations from around the globe. There is no cost to participate. The registration link and the program will become available soon. You can view sessions from the 2019 conference online.
 
Scholarships for online professional learning courses
Whether you are interested in methodology and didactics or in improving your language skills, the Goethe-Institut offers teachers of German a comprehensive selection of professional development courses. Please check the website for further details on the courses that scholarships are being offered for and application deadlines.

My grammar rules
The 90 minute online grammar workshops designed for teachers of German are back by popular demand. Every Thursday evening there will be workshops on effective methods for teaching grammar and new ideas for the classroom. More information is available online.

Professional learning
Professional learning has been organised by the GTB MLTAQ. It includes a practical presentation of a unit on pop culture, an exploration of online/remote learning tools and opportunities to share your experiences, resources and ideas. Come and enjoy the chance to network. All teachers of German are welcome to attend. Further information and registration details are available online.

Online materials
Given that more schools are faced with having to teach in a virtual classroom again, we have compiled a collection of materials that are suitable for the teaching and learning of German online.

Merit awards
Teachers of German in NSW can place orders for free book prizes for school students who have shown superior achievement in their studies of the German language. Further information is available online.

Unternehmen Deutsch
More than 200 students of German in Australia are about to submit their fantastic product or service ideas for German companies in this year's creative contest for professional orientation. A shortlist of the most innovative and creative ideas can be viewed online the end of August. Take part in the online voting together with your students and let us know which one you like best. More information is available via the website.

Goethe-Institut online workshops

The Goethe-Institut will host a series of workshops, "Kurz und bündig", by educators from Europe and Australia who were scheduled to present at the recently cancelled National Conference for Teachers of German in Melbourne.

The workshops will focus on digital learning and will be conducted via Zoom. They will run fortnightly, beginning 31 July, from 4-5pm AEST. There is no cost to participate.
 
The first workshop in the series is Smart Notebook by Eva Spiesberger. This workshop addresses the following topics: Creating interesting and moving images; backgrounds and interactive tables; where to find royalty-free suitable photos, images and graphics; and how to ensure spontaneity in online classrooms.

German school seeks NSW school for collaborative project (Stage 5)

After a successful collaboration with a high school in Ohio, the Otto-Pankok School in Mülheim an der Ruhr is looking for a NSW high school to conduct a 3-4-week long project on Australian and German culture by email.

Please find below the draft project description (which can be adjusted) and the contact details of the coordinating teacher. The school is interested in further projects with other students – suggestions welcome.  
 
Schüler*innen: 9. Klasse mit 30 Schüler*innen, im Alter von 14-15 Jahren
Projektsprache: Mischung von Deutsch/Englisch, offen für Vorschläge  
Zeitraum: 3-4 Wochen im Oktober/November
Mögliche Schwerpunkte: A. Getting to know each other; B. Where we live and what we like about it; C What are your future goals, hopes, and dreams?

My grammar rules for teachers of German
Online grammar workshops are now available for teachers of German. The workshops run for 90 minutes every Thursday evening. Participants will learn effective methods for teaching grammar and new ideas for the classroom.

New teaching materials
New teaching materials on environmental topics accompanying two films produced by PASCH students in Australia as part of the project UmWelten are now available for download. The package includes unit planners aligned to the Australian curriculum to make the use in classroom easier and more accessible.
 
New workbook on climate change
The new Lingo macht Mint workbook, Klima der Welt, has been released and can now be downloaded for free. The effects of climate change are at the centre of this workbook and students learn about new technologies that can help combat global warming.

GETVICO24 – virtual German teacher conference 2020

The first edition of GETVICO virtual conference will be held on 20-21 October 2020. GETVICO is a virtual platform for German teachers to exchange ideas, resources and teaching practices. The conference will be held in German.
