The community languages program, which provides students with access to study their background language, began in 1981 with an allocation of 30 teacher positions. The number of teaching positions was gradually increased to 243.8 FTE as part of the 1996 government commitments. These allocations are assessed annually. Arabic, Auslan, Assyrian, Bengali, Chinese, Dari, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Maori, Nepali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, Tongan, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.
